job market can change a lot in 3 years. I have a rising CS major junior at UMD. They had an internship this past year. ML and cybersecurity are in higher demand than general CS programming.

Any other updates? So much chatter about getting in, so little about results. I thought DCUM loved to brag? Give me some hope that the $ is well spent!

Once kids graduate, parents stop looking at the college forum.

DD2: CS + art major from HYPMS, 3.9 GPA, after a stressful senior fall + spring of job apps, she is doing a 10 week internship at a large media company over the summer before starting full-time at one of the Elon companies next month, both positions in CS and on the west coast. She loved her junior year internship but they didn't hire back interns after layoffs.

It's much harder out there than 2 years ago for CS majors but opportunities are still there if you keep looking.

Well, sure, those are the ones who post. But basically the majority of people post on this forum when their kids are juniors and seniors, that's why there's so much about getting in. If they happen to have a recent grade when their other kid is that age, sure they might chime in. The numbers of those are necessarily going to be far fewer.

DC was a CS major but had a few accounting major friends at USC. They're all employed fine in LA. Finance friends are struggling a lot more with competitive industries.

I hope my daughter chooses accounting over finance. She’s between the two after first year of college.

Unemployment has always been low in my life when people desperately need to work to survive, not because the market is any good. Nowadays for an entry level job, it is not uncommon to fight against 1000 other applicants, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out with the insane amount of early career training and work that students are taking up. I was saddened, but not surprised, to hear that all of DC's freshman friend group has internships this summer, and DC was stressed throughout the entire year trying to get a job.

Would you mind sharing which college your DC attends? I’m betting freshmen summer internships were arranged by parents.

Penn. Nothing “arranged” just the school’s hustler culture.

Have a rising Sophomore at Penn. None of kid’s friends had internships this year- engineering. Don’t know any freshman locally (from any undergrad) who have internships, unless arranged/facilitated by family connections.

I don't really see engineers strive for many internships. Econ/Finance kids get a lot more. A Wharton student with an internship first semester isn't outrageous.

They all applied and no one selected. Lots of local friends in lots of majors with no success without connections.

My rising sophomore and his friend group also don’t have internships this summer. They’re all working “regular” summer jobs.

I have consistently heard from friends that their kids start internships the summer before junior year.
