Sorry, meant to say received offer before senior year. |
| Uchicago Grad, Phi Beta Kappa, Physics major with a fellowship opportunity to study internationally before a PhD at Harvard. I was hoping DC would come back home but have accepted that ship has long sailed. |
That’s wonderful. Congratulations to your son. |
Impressive! |
It's always going to be a subset of 100%, but some schools are more persistent in getting data than others. Some don't press because there's a bias -- kids with something they are proud to report are more likely to report. Others tie reporting to some aspect of the graduation process and get higher response rates and thus more accurate data. Some accrediting bodies require this data collection to be robust. Always check the response rates. |
+100 Kid at UChicago, same —almost all have various research or internships after freshman year, same with the hopkins kids, and some of them have paid reserach with professors, through school funds |
They actually write legislation and tell congress how to vote. |
Not surprised: Swarthmore is top tier, highly sought after like ivy/T10, and that is a niche field so there are not a lot of undergrads studying it who have the known undergrad name and who are not aiming grad school. CS majors are oversaturating the market: only CS grads from top-tier schools(T10/ivy, Berkeley, CMU) are doing well this year |
| Any updates from UMD CS majors? I have a rising sophomore. |
They hire preferentially from ivies and Uchicago, Duke, Stanford et al, the usual suspects. There are many different focuses: environmental causes and climate are currently quite active. Most are political in some way; some have a military bent with ties to government contracts. |
My daughter is moving to Boston from NYC and got a one bedroom apartment for $4,000 a month. Everything’s extra of course. $1,500 is a great deal. |
Sounded weird, sorry. I meant even though she’s just starting out anything she begins with will be exciting. But they’ll be PhDs there that are just starting too. She’ll meet a lot of people who will be good resources for her career. I know a lot of scientists in the Boston / Cambridge area. |
Did not realize they hired so preferentially but makes sense when you look at policies so many espouse. For example, railing against merit-based aid when they themselves grew up in wealthy households and graduated from Ivies. Clueless. |
The other popular move is to just jump from different Air BnBs which are also fairly cheap (plenty for $2k per month or less), based on trying out different neighborhoods. Don’t have to buy any furniture or appliances. I think there are tons of people that will rent an AirBnB fairly long term (3-6 months), but not long enough for CA tenant laws to kick in. |
Thank you. I’ve been on DCUM from pregnancy to his flying the nest. There is a lot to learn here! |
