Your ACT was too low. Seriously, you’ll more than likely get in during RD. I assume you’re not going to withdraw your application.

So if she had gone test optional she WOULD have gotten in Early? I think that’s unfair. She could have scored a 26 and gone test optional—but a 34 and she still should have gone TO? Is there any way it’s connected to our financial need?

If an academically comparable Ivy (say, Penn/Cornell/Columbia) costs 90K a year, what would you pay for Michigan?

Not comparable but also look at the resources available per student. It is a large public university but priced like an Ivy without the benefits.

So rejections did happen?

This. A 4.0 UW should frankly have better than a 34. It proves grade inflation.

How things have changed! My DD is applying with significantly higher qualifications than I had and just praying she makes it.

But 30 years ago, you probably didn't do SAT prep and have grade inflation where nobody gets a B.

True, I took the SATs once and got in the 1400s and that was enough to get me into Michigan plus an Ivy. I also was ranked 3rd in my HS class with a few B+s on my transcript. Now all of my former safeties would be out of reach.

Except if you were in HS today you would be doing SAT prep and benefitting from grade inflation. Also SAT scores from 30 years ago aren’t equivalent to todays scores -the scoring has be reset a couple of times.

I didn’t know that, is there a way to say what a 1470 from 1994 would be today?

😂 We couldn’t afford test prep. She took some practice tests online and we splurged for her to take twice: 33 and then 34. Grade inflation? No bruh. She’s a A student and top of her class, but our HS doesn’t do class rankings. Again, if a 34 is too low, she would have gotten in with a 4.0 UW and no test score? Unfair to me, when we were trying to give UM as much info as possible.

I'd say academically comparable but far from comparable from a resources available perspective. Have a kid at Michigan and an Ivy, so know this first hand.

34 is plenty good. Make sure you send in the LOCI and mid-year grades (even if they are not asking for these). A deferred at Michigan sometimes means, 'we haven't gotten around to doing a deep dive into your application' and not always 'you are not good enough for this round'. Good luck!

Ignore this person making assertions about your kid and grade inflation. Mine had a 1520 SAT and perfect GPA, lots of rigor and activities. It’s numbers- the number of OOS applicants - and the fact that it’s engineering. They were right to submit scores - hopefully RD will work out.

My kid has a 4.8 w and got a 31 composite, 33 superscore. He was deferred at MI and WI. Got into MD. He wanted to submit. I agree if you don't submit I would assume it's in the 20's

Hoping his straight A's (in hard classes) help w RD.

By resources, do you mean only need-based financial aid? I would like to understand these posts better...

I made the comment about the ACT being too low. It was made in jest. I am curious is this student is still hoping to attend Michigan or not.

Disappointed but not shocked. His school got 6 in EA last year and this year only 1. Hoping things shake out in the spring.

Your DC's FC?

I have either had kids or close friends with kids graduating HS over the last six or so years and this year seems like a departure from the last three years as HS '21 was a departure from HS '20 and preceding years. Am hearing about "last year Cornell took 5 and the year before 4 but this year 1" or the MI example above with a lot more frequency. It always seems tough when it is your kid's year, but from my POV, looking at it over this span, this feels like another inflection point.
