Why are Americans so defensive about America?

Because I truly would never want to live anywhere else or be a citizen anywhere else, and I recognize that so many feel the same (that’s why they keep coming!).

I just came from Europe and had multiple conversations with locals about how defensive French/German/Brits are when discussing their own country. I don’t buy that this is solely an American thing, I think its an individual thing.

Not sure why are you include communism on that list. Buddhism is an Asian ‘invention’ but nobody is forced to adopt it. It’s a little insulting to deny agency of people like the Chinese who chose to adopt communism. There are also plenty of people who might argue communism was a positive in certain countries. Isn’t it a very US perspective to say it was bad?

The problem is you don’t know what the world would look like without European colonialism. It could be messed up in some other way. It’s not like there weren’t other empires (eg Mongols, Ottomans, various African empires, Arab conquests in India).

Some of you need to read the piece in the NYT why colonialism isn’t what’s going on in Israel-Palestine. Colonialism doesn’t really map to the history there. People who think it’s colonialism have a TikTok deep level understanding of history.

Is it? Is Indonesia messed up today due to its colonial past? I’d say they’re doing a pretty good job despite it. What about Malaysia, Japan, China, India, Thailand? Are they pretty messed up?

Funny how it's only European colonialism that is "evil" - funny how the violent and barbaric history of so many other massive waves of colonialism never get the same mention - such as violent Muslim conquest of vast swaths of land, Imperial Russian conquest and expansion into Asia, the Soviet cold war and Russia's continued attempts to destabilize Africa and create proxy states, Japanese and Chinese imperialism and colonialism in Asia and the Pacific, China's involvement in North Korea, Vietnam and other parts of Asia which destabilized nations and started wars, and continued attempts to get hooks throughout the world, Iran and its many proxies, like Houthis, Hezbollah and so on... Did you ever consider that they criticize their own country all the time (I do:our out of control gun policies, politics, etc). But it is sometimes hard to hear people who chose to live here (vs are from here) go on and on about the deficiencies.

Seems sort of rude, and prompts the question (since they have a choice) about why they stay.
