Everyone who has an average IQ (and I mean everyone) can learn to read and do algebra. Also, we can teach kids what tools they can use to have success. Schools can't level all the differences. If we were able and willing to meet kids where they are, spend more time reteaching kids who need repetition to get concepts and spend time building background knowledge for kids that need that, we'd end up with more kids happy and thriving in school. Unfortunately, we want to pretend different needs don't exist, all kids can meet the same benchmarks in the same time frame, and we consequently teach to an almost non-existent middle which leaves a lot of kids bored and a lot of kids perpetually confused.

But why????? How do we change this?

First, you have to admit far leftist policies resulted in this disaster. Then you have to get back to the basics of accountability. Kids don't hand in he on time? Zero. Kids don't attend class? Zero. There are no make up sessions and 50% awards for not showing up to work in real life. Look, accountability and common sense education WILL mean there will be some brown kids who fail and cannot keep up. So what? It is far more racist to assume they cannot do the work and be held accountable to high quality standards.

Everyone wants equitable outcomes, for sure. But throwing all standards out the window to reach that goal is a fatal mistake. Nothing will change until voters stop voting for far left liberal loons and their policies. It's truly remarkable how people have congitive dissonance and cannot associate the rapid decline of MCPS with their voting behaviors.

MCPS and MoCo are permanently screwed and will be in steep decline, because do you think they'll ever stop voting far left? One party rule with carte blanche to do whatever and never be held accountable to anyone.

Change all of that first and then you can get back to the basics of quality education.

I would say right-wing policies resulted in this. The GOP's whole jam is to dumb down the population in order to expand their base. This is who mainly benefits from these policies.

Yes the right-wing hates public education. They resent having to subsidize the education of poor and would prefer vouchers they can use for private. They don't care about society's welfare it's all about them.

What education? Are you lost?

Clearly you missed the entire premise of this thread. There's no education going on in MCPS anymore. Even the teachers are attesting to that fact.

True, the only way the GOP can grow it's base is by dumbing down the population. This has culminated in all out war on public schools. All these things like lax gun laws or the decline of consequences are part of their plan to destroy public schools.

Or is it your own biases speaking?
The source is that the left has controlled MCPS for decades and sometime in the past 10, the far left gained control and things started to go downward quickly. We can also look at all the things that are listed in the Reddit post that are causing problems. Those are leftist solutions, not far-right.

You mean the far-right, which has been investing heavily in spreading misinformation on anonymous baords.

We have a failure on both the extreme right and left. But in MoCo, clearly it is the left at fault. Covid shutdowns, a focus on equal outcomes at the expense of quality, and a failure to impose discipline.

It is a disaster.

This is MoCo. Not a Republican in sight.

This is disappointing and we parents should be vocal about opposing the lack of accountability our children have been held to. We should be vocal supporters of discipline and teacher autonomy. We should push our schools to push our children outside of what’s comfortable.

AND I know my child is getting a top notch education in MCPS because we are on top of them and hold them to high standards of personal responsibility and respect for their teachers and themselves.

Thank you to the fantastic teachers who have made such a difference in our DCs lives.

Left wing: give out phony diplomas

Right wing: expel and flunk.

Neither of these is a solution.

Parents don’t care. Period. I have 12 kids who had over 26 absences each in quarter 1. It’s time for a mirror.

Just like Baltimore City, not a Republican in sight.

Anonymous wrote:That was a pretty enlightening Reddit thread. If a student is not self-motivated and high-performing, they are completely failed by MCPS schools today. It's a race to the bottom for average kids. And it's entirely caused by central office bureaucrats. Monica McKnight cannot leave soon enough.
So in summary, to increase graduation rates, MCPS stopped requiring kids actually go to class and stopped teachers from giving zeros for not doing any assignments. That caused a drop in attendance rates, so they redefined absences as just very tardy. The result is that kids without parental oversight are hanging out in the hallways and graduating with no skills, knowledge, or self-discipline. However, the graduation and attendance rates are meeting metrics.

Lol, you all need to name schools for me to believe this. And even more, you need to name schools because all that was done in the name of equity, but if true, it's actually hurting the kids who need equity.

What will naming schools actually accomplish for you? I know there is the 50% rule at Blair and Eastern. Does that make it real for you now?

They got rid of the 50% rule.

Every school

The policies may apply across all schools (though actually, principals seem to be implementing differently at different school). But since students' norms, aspirations, and home-life pressures are different, the policies end up with pretty different effects at different schools.

My husband is a sub and he has been deliberately choosing to go to different middle schools over the past year. He said there is an enormous difference in student behavior (in class on time, obeying teacher, paying attention) in different schools. Clearly, a sub doesn't see the breadth of issues. But in some schools, students follow instructions, pay attention, etc. Of course, they tend to talk to their friends, etc. But he said that after he tells them to pay attention, there's ten minutes of quiet before the volume becomes too high once again.

At other schools, kids are in hallways, they don't have any response when he tells them to pay attention. There are of course many good kids, but the fact that others in the class don't have any discernible response when he tells them to sit down means that no one learns enough. He subbed on the last day of school last year, and the co-teacher reached out to some students saying that if they spent that last hour in class to finish/turn in three missing assignments, they would pass the class (if not, they would get an E). And he said the kids just said they didn't care what their grade was, and didn't do those three assignments.

That’s interesting because if I log on Parent Vue right now, and there is an assignment that is not graded for my kids (Blair), the default score is 50%. In every class.
