OP here. We have thought about getting a gun, but decided against it, for the following reason: in the past six months at my daughter's stressful elite private school three children committed suicides (unrelated to each other), each of them with the gun of their parents. Besides, if the gun is kept fairly secured and hidden, there might not be enough time to get it.
Kids don’t need a gun to commit suicide. There are articles that have been written about 12 year olds hanging themselves in their room. The number one reason is bullying. Social media is another constant form of harassment telling kids to kill themselves. There are also other aspects and complicated issues, it’s not just one thing. There are so many posters here who talk about their elite private schools and their above average super athlete and top 1% of their class. Some of it exaggerated but you have to wonder if it trickles down to the kids and they feel superior somehow. Maybe start to bully in middle school because a girl doesn’t have any crocs. Or a boy can’t run very well. Parents of bullies need to take full responsibility if something like that happens.
