Endowment sizes: Florida has about $2.4 B Michigan has about $17.3 B Yet they are next to each other in the rankings. Why should we care about Michigan's endowment? |
What I have seen from my kids’ high school.
Some high level kids who got shut out of Ivys and other top schools end up going to Michigan and are very happy there. Wisconsin is easier to get into and you see more mid tier kids going there. |
Because this is a Michigan vs Wisconsin discussion. Start a new thread on Michigan vs Florida if you want to keep mentioning your favorite school. |
I think there is a strong argument that for public universities, budget support by the state is more important than endowment size. |
You are characterizing children as “mid-tier”? Aren’t you are peach. |
I have seen plenty of top tier kids eschew Ivys for Michigan and Michigan for Wisconsin. People go to schools based on fit and vibe. How dare you categorize a kid as "mid tier" - you have NO IDEA what went into their college selection process. |
Are you 15? In addition to this being immature and mean, the OOS acceptance rate for Madison is about 20%. That’s not an acceptance rate for average students. |
Not sure why people are getting so riled up. It is obvious what that poster meant: top tier grades vs. mid tier grades. Some of you get offended over every little thing. Some kids do better academically and some do worse. That is reality no matter how much you want to sugar coat it. |
Michigan is a lot harder to get into from the DMV than Wisconsin. If you don’t believe me, ask your kid’s college counselor |
What about Michigan legacy kids? Do they have any advantage? |
Agree. And next closest to each is IU. |
Absolutely agree. “In 1960, state support accounted for 78 percent of the UM-Ann Arbor General Fund budget. It has dropped to 13% of the General Fund budget in 2023.” By far the most important source of revenue for Michigan is tuition and fees. |

As a Proud Big Ten alum from WI, I love this thread comparing two great schools. You really can't go wrong with either one. I have not been to Ann Arbor so I can't comment on the town, but I think WI is a close-to-perfect college town. With State Street connecting the campus and Capital. MI does have a better reputation, but I will note on the new NYTimes Build your own college ranking tool, WI is #10 in the country and MI is #14 if you max out every ranking to give them all equal weight. Suggests well-rounded schools for both of them. Note that MIT is #16 with this method.

Waste of time to cite the NYTs. Unless you’re a paying member, you’re not going to get to read it. |
