Are you suggesting kids on the MCV path are druggist artist wannabes? Oh, the art program is one of the best in the country. Try harder. |
What do you think UMW is? It's basically open enrollment and still can't get numbers it wants |
Nah. That’s not accurate. UMW attracts and enrolls good students. It’s self-selecting. |
Sure, and that doesn't make UMW a bad school. |
Both my DD and DS liked UMW more than CNU or JMU. They ended up getting into their first choice schools, but UMW was both their preferred safety. My son did bristle a little at the Mary in UMW (though of course my DD could care less about the "Christopher" in CNU or the "James" in JMU or the "George" in GMU) but it didn't stop him from choosing UMW over CNU or JMU as his safety option. |
Why UMW rather than CNU? |
Its enrollment is shrinking and not by choice |
Not the PP you were addressing but my daughter likes it better than CNU because it has a more traditional campus and it’s close to a cute downtown. |
CNU's vibe is very modern and business feeling. Its campus feels very engineered, with new buildings but with 'traditional architecture.' There's a "career-prep" vibe to the school. Most of the kids that love W&M love its history and traditions along with its really high quality education. CNU seems ahistorical. A lot of kids who like CNU like that it feels clean and new, but that's usually not what those who like W&M are attracted to. |
There's been a crowd (or a few people with a lot of time on their hands) who are trying to influence VA to be more rightwing by posting a lot of talking points on here. I don't think they realize they are shooting themselves in the foot. |
This. My DD who only applied to W&M + UMW absolutely hated CNU. She thought it felt like a soulless hotel campus. Hated the well manicured flower beds vs. other colleges that featured native plant gardens and botanic research projects. Sciences felt like a lower priority vs at UMW and LACs she'd visited (again, this was her impression from the tour, I know they offer plenty of sciences). Also, too much emphasis on Greek life -- I don't know that this is the day-to-day reality but we were there on a big tour day and all the tour guides were in Greek orgs. She said it felt like the place where the preppy popular kids from her school would go. I know kids who go there who don't fit that vibe and have had a great experience but it was not the place for DD. She ended up going to an OOS rural LAC with a very strong emphasis on sciences. |
Didn’t you mean to write UMW instead of W&M in the above? |
The PP asked why CNU wasn't considered a safety for those who'd like to go to W&M--so I was answering that. UMW isn't as historical and traditional as W&M, but it was founded in 1908 and has kept a lot of its traditional character. CNU was founded as a community college in 1960, became a university in the 1990s and has done a lot of its building/growth more recently. It's more akin to GMU in its history. |
UVA, VT, W&M, JMU and GMU all had higher freshmen enrollments in 2022-23 than 2018-19. UMW shrank |
Let the numbers speak for themselves -- just select the relevant fields in SCHEV to do the comparisons. It shows that overall applications to UMW (not just enrollment) this year are down considerably from 2018 and that's NOT the case for UVA, VT, W&M and JMU -- some major increases there. Why this is, I don't know, although perhaps test optional has caused some students to focus on the more selective schools. CNU appears to have remained more or less static apart from a one-year dip. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B8_Report_new.asp |
