+1. It sounds like PP should focus more on his 'inclusive' child than on college sports. The end goal of college athletics isn't professional athletics for 99% of athletes. It's to compete and play the sport. I'd much rather my kid play D3 sports and get an education than play D1 and get spoonfed test results by the coaching staff. OP- UMW has an excellent baseball program, but D3 and club level. Tom Sheridan did a hell of a job building it up from scratch. |
Yea, you have serious issues alright. What a ridiculous response. Look, however you want to stereotype the typical UVA student, “nerd” is not the word that usually comes to mind. Snobby, pretty/handsome, white, rich, athletic etc., sure. But not “nerd.” “Nerd” is what most people would say applies to W&M and, yes, UMW. It’s obvious to both OP and her son that he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting into UVA, and that’s why they’re dismissing it out of hand. We all know he’d kill to go there and play baseball over any other school in Virginia. |

UVA finished last season with a 50-15 record and ranked 6th in the final Division 1 baseball polls. The athletic program as a whole finished as number four in Division 1’s Director’s Cup rankings, behind only Stanford (the perennial winner), Texas and Ohio State.
The school is chock full of hugely talented athletes - very much including baseball. A nerd school? I don’t think so. We all know why 0P and her son did not like UVA. They’re not fooling anybody. Can’t play baseball there, not getting into the school without it. And that’s ok. |
Well maybe, but while UVa has a big time college baseball program, at Mary Washington he'd probably get to play. |
Yes, of course. So say THAT. Be honest. Don’t dismiss the whole school as a bunch of “preppy nerds” just because you’re not gonna get recruited to play baseball there. No one is buying it. |
Ummm...it has sports. |
|
I loved my time at Mary Washington and would choose it again - in a heartbeat. I went to VT for grad school and felt very prepared. I think I was better prepared than classmates from VT undergrad, JMU, and other popular schools.
For the right student, UMW is an amazing choice. Small class sizes where you get to know your professors as individuals, no Greek system so you become friends with the people in your dorm, and a walkable campus/downtown make it a gem. Some students do go home on weekends but it’s definitely not a commuter school. |
yes they have sports, what I mean is big time sports, like div 1 sports. |
|
Op, it's a great choice for some!
Seriously though, you've got to know why it isn't a great choice for all -- don't you?? No big-time sports Gender imbalance Not as much going on Fredericksburg traffic |
|
The gender imbalance exists, but isn’t much different than other Virginia schools. People tend to consider it a women’s college based solely on its name.
Women are attending college in greater numbers than men. |
|
Isn't it 40/60 or worse?
|
|
65% women
35% men |
| UVA is 55% female, 45% male. |
My DD came home about every 4-5 weeks (so about 3 times per semester). It was great for us to see her, and great for her to take a little breather away from the college scene. She commented once that it was nice to be around "regular life" when she was home for the weekend. |
Can we just let the UVA discussion fade away? This thread is really about what UMW has going for it. Let.it.go. |
