Bride killed hours after ceremony

NP. I don't really understand people who don't understand drunk driving. Is it an East Coast/city thing? An age thing?

In most of the country, including the Carolinas, when you go to a restaurant or bar or club and have a drink, then you have to drive your car home. There's no other real option. It's too far to walk, there's no public transportation. Uber is convenient in DC but in many places, it's not. And leaving your car overnight is not allowed. The stigma has increased and people have started to be smarter about waiting before driving, but being drunk often means not making the best decisions. Is driving drunk the right thing to do? No. I've never done it, but I know many people who have (many of them have become wiser but not all and not always). I understand it.

And? None of these are excuses.

+1

I mean...seriously. I can't believe PP is saying that drunk driving is justified because there's apparently no other option when you want to get drunk. It's called Uber, dumbass. I think even the Carolinas have heard of taxis, or friends who are designated drivers, or personal responsibility in general.

She can’t do her crunches and her Dad says she doesn’t need to apologize, that “they don’t care” about what happened. Also, seems like someone is getting $pecial treatment

Honestly it sounds like OP was bang-on accurate about the driver's (lack of) character. Notice that there's not one tear shed for the bride, whose life actually IS over. It's just boo-hoo, consequences! If I had accidentally killed someone, I'd be praying for them.

Drunk drivers need to be put away for a long time. No apologies, especially in 2023 when there are Ubers/Lyfts, etc. at the touch of a screen.

Excuses in order:

It was a mistake. The driver shouldn't spend his life in jail for a simple mistake.
There was no intent. He couldn't understand the consequences of exceeding the speed limit slightly.
Why are they allowing people to drive golf carts on the road? Roads are dangerous and golf carts and pedestrians should stay away from them.

Golf carts also have no lights. They should not be on the road and they are hard to see.

The driver needs to pay the consequences. That poor bride is dead and her husband is in serious question. Wasn't a child also injured?

So as to keep anonymity, I’m not going to say how I know her but she’s had a very privileged life. Yes, a child and another adult and it’s not clear if the husband is going to live.

The husband is fine.

My golf cart has head lights and virtually everyone who owns one in my neighborhood has head lights on theirs. I don’t know why you think golf carts
Don’t have lights.

I’m hoping, assuming, this response is sarcastic. Even as a person who knows tbe driver intimately I can say I hope she goes away for life.

She had multiple speeding violations prior and a very privileged life that she never learned from. I hope she gets the max.

I would agree but do have to wonder about allowing a golf cart on the road.

So, if I see a golf cart on the road, am I allowed to ram it?

speeding less than 10 mph over the limit - NBD
Not a privileged life at all
Carts are not allowed on the road
Contributory Negligence.

The only reason to be out of prison after killing someone is if you dedicate your life working to preventing deaths like the one you caused.

Nothing else counts as remorse.

Golf carts are only allowed on certain roads and only at night IF they have certain safety features like lights, which this one had. This is very common in a low country community. If the driver was not drunk and driving, 40 mph over, this would not have been a factor.

I'm from Florida, so I get it. I also disagree that it's safe to have golf carts with a max speed of 25 mph on a road. Similarly, I think it's foolish to allow cars on beaches where there are sunbathers. It's a recipe for disaster.

+1. I agree that the driver of the suv should go away for a very long time, but the world is full of drunk idiots, which is why, if I’m going to be on the road, I want to be in my highly engineered car. I live in an area with a growing number of golf carts and allowing them on the roads is a terrible idea. My little town now has three golf cart dealerships, and even worse, they rent them to tourists (who don’t know the rules about where they can legally be driven). We have developed sophisticated safety systems for cars, so now we’re going to go tootling around in golf carts with zero impact protection? I see people riding on rear facing seats with their legs hanging off the back and holding babies in their arms, children driving golf carts, people driving them on roads where the speed limit is over 35, etc etc. I have thought it’s a matter of time before something terrible happens in my own community.

+1 to these posters. We live very close to a fun, historic strip in Florida and see the same stupid stuff in golf carts all the time. They're not on a golf course with only pedestrians and other golf carts. They're on roads with cars and freight trucks.

To clarify, this doesn't excuse the drunk driver who killed the woman and injured others; just a sidebar pointing out the foolishness of allowing golf carts on roads with cars.

I assume bicycles are right out as well?

Two broken legs and a wife to bury? I doubt he's fine.

Not true. Street legal (and actually all as far as I know) carts have lights, wipers, turn signals, etc

I live on a golf course. The carts most certainly do have headlights.

Also, when I visit my aunt in her senior community in FL, every golf cart there has headlights and tail lights.

Horrific. The poor groom will be crippled for life and faces a very painful recovery even if he lives.
People use golf carts illegally (not that this one was) here in NOVA. I really wish they wouldn’t. It’s kids. They think they are cool. It’s so dangerous.
