Not sure what you meant, but Whitman is the whitest school.

Whitest in the DCC?

That poster is just another in the long line of annoying people who like to provoke the ToK parents. Those of us in Kensington and zoned for Einstein don’t have any desire for Parkwood to be added to Einstein. Einstein already has the lowest capacity of the schools in this boundary study and is terribly overcrowded. I don’t want my kid attending school in portables just because someone is trying to stick it to the ToK parents.

New word - what is a Tok parent?

"Town of Kensington." Town residents are zoned to WJ, while others with Kensington addresses but outside the town limits are zoned for Einstein.

Some outside the ToK with Kensington addresses go to Einstein. Many go to WJ, too. Postal addresses have no bearing on MCPS.

Yes, but the easternmost part of MCPS's boundary line for Kensington-Parkwood/WJ is clearly based on the Town of Kensington's boundary line:

Town:

School:

I don't know how long this arrangement has been in place, or if it is codified anywhere, but it will be interesting to see if there are any new boundary options that make changes.

Historically, MCPS tries to not split small incorporated municipalities.

These are all of the inc. towns in MoCo. Other than R'ville, G'burg, and Takoma Park they're tiny, so keeping them together isn't difficult.

Brookeville (inc. 1808), Rockville (1860), Poolesville (1867), Gaithersburg (1878), Barnesville (1888), Takoma Park (1890), Laytonsville (1892), Kensington (1894), Garrett Park (1898), Glen Echo (1904), Somerset (1906), Chevy Chase Village (1910), Town of Chevy Chase (1918), Washington Grove (1937), Village of Chevy Chase, Sections 3 and 5 (1982), Martin's Additions (1985), Chevy Chase View (1993), and North Chevy Chase (1996).

Kensington-Parkwood has lots of kids that don’t live in the Town of Kensington because they live in… you guessed it… Parkwood.

Parkwood's a neighborhood, not a town.

Just like Bethesda or Silver Spring!

Sure, but they could have still kept the municipality together within the Einstein cluster.

Maybe but since Einstein is already beyond capacity makes a lot more since to rezone kids to Woodward.

This has happened before. Look what happened all those years ago when Woodward closed and homes in Rockville / Potomac were re-zoned from Wootton to Richard Montgomery. The home owners tried law suits, public protests, getting a mayor elected, and even getting a home owner on the school board. Nothing worked, the kids got moved, and the stature of RM improved.

And people are still b|tching about it. 40 years later.

Parkwood's a neighborhood, not a town.

I never said it was a town. But it’s a big neighborhood that used to have its own ES before they closed Kensington ES.

When Kensington ES was open, was it zoned for WJ or Einstein? (Or old Woodward?)

I don’t know for sure but I think WJ. The town has gone there since WJ opened.

From the article, "to relieve overcrowding at Wootton, which has room for 1,700 students but last year had 1,850 and was forced to use portable classrooms for the overflow[i]."

MCPS and the school board used to act when a school was overcrowded by 150 students. Today, Einstein is 502 over their capacity and WJ is 673 over their capacity. I would say that MCPS and the school board are derelict in their duties, as these numbers are outrageous.

It's clear where Woodward will get close to 1100 of their new students (Einstein and WJ). The other 1,000 is not so clear

So when they make the school changes do become effective immediately? Do kids already in middle and high school have to switch schools right away even if it would be their final year (I.e. 8th or senior)?

Usually juniors and seniors do not switch...not sure about middle school.

Personally, I'm all for keeping them together. If there was space, at Einstein since it's nearby, but Einstein is way overcrowded already. You can't shift in people from WJ to the west into Einstein without removing more people from Einstein on the east side. Where do you want to put them? There is no room at Blair, Wheaton, or Northwood. Maybe consider using, I don't know, Woodward? It seems closer and will have space.

Typically, rising 8th, 11th, and 12th graders are allowed to stay at their schools.

Will the capacity of the brand new Northwood be over 2300 students? Even so I have doubts it could take on students from Einstein with Montgomery Blair growing.
