Aren’t people going to flip out about their home values if they are redistricted to a “worse” high school? I can see people freaking out if their neighborhood goes from WJ to Einstein. Or even Whitman to BCC or WJ. That’s potentially a couple $100k loss in home values. What about those that stretched to by a smaller/older home in one of those neighborhoods because of the assigned schools? I’m guessing mcps won’t care at all about that? |
Kensington-Parkwood has lots of kids that don’t live in the Town of Kensington because they live in… you guessed it… Parkwood. |
Perhaps, but they may also realize that's nonsense pushed by real-estate agents and that the same kid will do as well at any of these schools. |
Maybe but since Einstein is already beyond capacity makes a lot more since to rezone kids to Woodward. |
That is why this thread is bonkers and will get worse. It’s also why RE is a risky investment. You could get rezoned. Your neighbor could ruin your sales value by being a sexual predator or failing to maintain their property. They could build a big annoying parking garage 2 blocks away. Your whole town could flood. I’m sympathetic but this falls under the category of life is fully of shitty risks. |
This has happened before. Look what happened all those years ago when Woodward closed and homes in Rockville / Potomac were re-zoned from Wootton to Richard Montgomery. The home owners tried law suits, public protests, getting a mayor elected, and even getting a home owner on the school board. Nothing worked, the kids got moved, and the stature of RM improved. https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1987/05/25/school-shift-stirs-rockville-dispute/a460e6bd-9d22-4b6d-a490-c8aef025f231/ |
I understand that but the scope of the boundary study does not include elementary school boundaries. Therefore it would be split articulation or sending all students from KPES to Einstein. |
Wow -- that brings back memories. Someone had a good pull with that article. |
I really hope they don’t start doing split articulations to elementary schools. That is the worst. |
In a perfect world, there'd be more schools evenly spread throughout the county but that's not where we're at. Unfortunately, split articulations may happen. Regardless, things will be fine. |
They already have split articulations for elementary schools. There are at least a dozen all around the county. |
But they are a bummer for community cohesion. |
Why should MCPS care about that? They’re in the business of educating children, not maintaining inflated property values. |
Avoiding split articulation is just white privilege. Way to assume that everyone is a homeowner that never moves. Many MoCo residents are renters and transient. |
Remember that part of KPES are the townhouses literally right next door to Woodward. |
