Well an embryo is not a human being … the overwhelming number of abortions are carried out prior to 13 weeks … And there are sadly times when not having abortions does not support existing human lives - for either medical or moral reasons. The Christian Taliban are fine with forcing children and women to birth babies of their rapists or place the mothers life at risk .., yet casually disregard supporting existing sentient human life … |
You use extreme examples to support your position (eg, rape and incest) when the overwhelming majority of abortions are done because the mother simply chooses to end the pregnancy. Add embryo to the list of words to make you feel better about the decision to destroy life. Also, at what point does this embryo magically become a human? When he/she is born? I at least understand you argument about autonomy but you make no sense with respect to the baby. Just admit you believe women should have the right to kill their unborn embryo, fetus, baby whatever. |
You are the one with the extreme position that viable sentient human life starts at conception. The capacity got human consciousness is not possible before the organs are formed especially the brown and nervous system sometimes during the second trimester . Even if it is possible at earlier stages of oregancies, there are circumstances when abortion is justified . Life is way more complex and nuanced than you seem able to comprehend. How do you know why the majority of women who abort wish to do so? There are many different moral and medical reasons why women may believe that they are not able to responsibly continue with a pregnancy. Apart from medical reasons: Many women are trapped in violent or emotionally abusive relationships Minors who have been sex trafficked sometimes fall pregnant (and hundreds are each year even in DMV) Many women live in poverty and cannot afford to lose their minimum wage jobs as often happens once pregnancies begin to show Many women and girls have mental health and other disabilities that prevent them taking good care of themselves let alone babies/ childre The #MeToo movement showed us how depressingly common sexual assaults are. Even on college campuses, a third of female students report being sexually assaulted or harassed. If you care so much about life what are you doing to support human life that already exists ? Are you personally going to adopt children whose mothers either died in childbirth or put them up for adoption as they could not care for them? Are you going to pay for the education, clothes, food and shelter of all these babies forced into being against their mothers’ wills? Christian Taliban extremists and interference in what should be largely medical decisions between doctors and patients is causing doctors and medical specialists to flee maternity services in red abut Abortion states. Your extremism is hurting all women. |
You put words in my mouth? Where do I say that “sentient life” begins at conception? Where do I say anything about the morality of abortion? Quite the contrary, I think you make a solid argument for a woman’s autonomy I simply think most people know that you are arguing that a woman should be able to choose to kill the baby at will and without limitation. You just don’t want to accept that. Your other arguments are absurd. I think you’ve read the Handmaid’s Tale one too many times. |
“Life is nuanced . . .” Hmmm. Last I check you are either alive or dead. There is no in between. |
. Thank you for perfectly exemplifying an ability to appreciate nuance in ethical reasoning or life. This sort of black and white extremism has led to a lot of suffering. This absurd reasoning divorced from every day realities for so many women allows you to lecture others sanctimoniously while dismissing terrible outcomes such as rising maternal death rates, rise in maternal and child poverty and children giving birth to children. |

1) There is a big difference in killing evil in war (e.g. Just War theory) and killing innocent in abortion. 2) You're on very shaky ground here as to what is "morally sound." Who is to determine the criteria? You? |
Inability not ability. You are so literally minded, this needs to be pointed out as if it wasn’t obvious from context. |
Explain how life is nuanced? Should we kill the homeless because they are a drain on society? Kill the mentally ill? Those with down syndrome? You want to kill things that are inconvenient to you. You must be a huge fan of Margaret Sanger. |
1. Obviously there are differences. The proposed theory is Just Abortion theory not Just War Theory. St Augustine contended that Christian countries should have an aversion to war in general whenever it can be avoided but there are times when it is justified. St Thomas refined criteria for just wars related to minimizing loss of innocent life and avoiding predatory tactics. Just Abortion theory is not even a theory just a proposed framework for reasonable moderate Christians (and other faiths if they wish) to lay out that although people of faith should avoid abortions when possible there are circumstances when it is justified. 2. There is already a large body of medical Knowledge and mainstream support for when abortion is sometimes justified. Most reasonable people agree that abortion should be allowed in case of rape, incest, extreme congenital defects of fetus, or likely death of mother if pregnancy proceeds. There are many more subtle circumstances that would require consensus building. Obviously, determining criteria could not be decided by any one person or even group but would require collaboration between theologians, medical researchers, medical practitioners, social workers, social scientists and women’s health advocates. |
Endless examples of when abortion may be justified When 13 year olds have been impregnated by their step fathers, which may not technically count as incest but comes very close. When fetus is almost certain to die within short time after birth. This is already happening in snot abortion states and causes great grief to women forced to give birth to non viable life. When young mother has intellectual disabilities and was sexually exploited by care givers (also happening already) When mother is trapped in violent or abusive marriages and is in process of trying to escape (this often takes king time to plan safely and the women are often raped within marriage When fetus has serious congenital defects that will result in extremely poor quality of life Many more examples - if you got off your high horse and actually listened to women facing such dilemmas you might be less judgmental about them. |
The pregnant woman decides what is just cause. It’s her body and her life. |
Or when a 20 year old college student is pregnant & has no money to pay for childcare. |
It’s an early stage of development for a human being. Not fully formed. Completely dependent on the woman. It’s not a living, breathing person. It’s a potential person. The woman, however, is a living, breathing person whose life and body is what matters here. Her body is her domain. You don’t get to control other people’s bodies. |
