another +1! |
I don't think she "sided" with them. I think she agreed with the goals. What's more, a SB member NEEDS to be able to work with "odd groups of miscreants" as you've already noted by citing her campaign manager's poor behavior at a SB meeting. Unless another candidate really impresses me with something spectacular, if the vote were today, I'd likely vote for MT if for no other reason than the fact that she was able to endure some of the worst behaved parents and to manage a range of perspectives and viewpoints. |
YES! Absolutely NOT the person for the job of SB! |
Regarding anonymous opinion pieces. I have not contributed to the newsletter but here are some reasons I would only do so on an anonymous basis: 1) look at this thread and the delusional APE trolls who want to tear them apart and spread lies - I don't need that in my life, 2) I have a serious career I've worked very hard for and do not need opinion pieces re my kids' school experience showing in a google search, 3) I respect my kids' privacy and wouldn't feel comfortable sharing their difficulties so publicly. |
I'd say the fact that APE endures and is a seemingly strong, very organized group that continues to put out the most comprehensive information of any APS sources says quite the opposite. Under an ineffective leader, the group would have imploded. For all you know, she contained or helped reduce some of the negative behaviors. |
So I now can guess pretty accurately who you are based on your rabid AEM postings. ![]() I was a member of the APE FB group. I was never anti-mask and there wasn't a push for that in the FB group or by the members. Was there a handful of people who might of been - probably - but overall that just wasn't the issue at hand. It was school reopening. And if masks were a part of that, it was ok. And no one needs to believe me because if you really want to know, request to join the group and read through the posts. I think people like you who continue to push the whole masking thing are behind the curve. People have moved on and don't really care or have anymore need to use a mask to display there particular political party. The year started off with AEM and even posts on this board about how terrible no masks was going to be and the covid explosion sure to come. It never happened and largely people have accepted it's not going to AND in hindsight, yes, many have probably come to realize they did have some overblown ideas about school spread, etc. Especially as more and more studies and data from legit sources seem to indicate. Now we know better so in the future, they can draw from the lessons learned. |
Understandable - and precisely why you wouldn't write a letter to the editor or an opinion piece for the Washington Post, as it requires a name. Like any reputable newspaper, APE should do the same; and it would serve itself well to have non-anonymous opinion pieces, if they're going to have them. If not, then don't couch it in that format and just write about the issues. I guarantee you: the anonymity makes things suspect and makes people leery of the group, which then diminishes the group's credibility and effectiveness. |
As a reader of their newsletter, I respectfully disagree. I’ve found the pieces very valuable and informative and can relate to many of the opinions. Perhaps the anonymity would make the suspect if the were writing on issues that weren’t hyper-local or personal. I do not hold them to same std as the WaPo and anyone that does is being unreasonable, IMO. |
This is concerning in a Democratic Primary. It's a talking point of the ultra right "parents rights" movement. Conservative parents are joining APS committees in large numbers. What if the parent run School Health Board puts out a recommendation to limit rights to trans students? Or change family life curriculum? What if the parent run ACTL Social Studies committee recommends limiting African American Studies? What if the parent run ACTL ELA committee doesn't want some types of books to be read in English? "Drive central office staff to respect APS committee recommendations and survey results" - Erin's wesbite Do we really want central office to respect committees recommendations that don't share out values? This is why we have an elected school board. It's their job to look at the recommendations offered by central office staff AND parent committees, and then decide how to move forward in the best interest of our community and students. |
Interesting. I have never posted on AEM. Many people saw their bad behavior. It was very public. |
The thing is, we can see in hindsight that they were correct in many ways. After vaccines were available to all adults there really wasn't any reason to wear masks or not go 5 days/week in person. I realize that masks were a political signifier in many ways, but there really was no scientific reason to bother with them at all in the 21-22 school year. |
Close affiliation with APE is a bad look for someone trying to be competitive in the democratic caucus. |
the whole advisory committee thing in APS is kind of problematic- and I say this as a former advisory committee member. I do get concerned when I hear pushing for the advisory committees to be 'respected' more. They already get a great deal of 'respect', air time with the school board, and aps staff focus. They don't, and absolutely should not, always get their recommendations adopted. Recognize that ANYONE can join an advisory committee. It doesn't mean that you have any level of expertise, it doesn't mean that you have a system wide view of things- it simply means that you are willing to show up for meetings. Most of the committees are tiny. There is little to no 'vetting' of the recommendations. Some of them are super thoughtful, and have been extremely helpful to APS- eg the English Language Arts committee that pushed back for years on the lucy caulkins curriculum and continued to bring the need for phonics based instruction, and research surrounding that, up. Less useful is the also extraordinary common recommendation to add additional central office staff e.g. 'immersion specialist.' or like most recently from the science advisory committee add a 'science specialist' and science 'coaches' to the elementary schools. https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/November-2022_Science-Advisory-Committee-Recommendation-1.pdf |
I am a current Escuela Key parent. I would not vote for Erin. Or rather every parent is named Erin there, so we call her Erin FS.
Erin FS did not keep our community together during the pandemic. It was the previous president who not only got us through the bogus move, but then the pandemic happened and it was A's leadership that kept us together. Erin paled compared to her. A lot of us who remember her still miss her. Her kid is now in middle school. Honestly, she should be the person running for the SB. During Erin FS's reign, she micromanaged the entire school. It's like I had to get her permission to speak to Sra Perdomo. I wasn't even on the PTA, and I laughed and laughed. I was friendly with a few people on the Executive Committee and they all hated her too. One even left for private school. She had other reasons to leave, but I distinctly remember her saying that she never wanted to deal with Erin FS again. She is rude AF too if she doesn't like you. Honestly, I don't like any candidate who has filed. What a terrible lot. Who is that 22 year old again because he might have my vote. Go Gen Z!

This is straight paranoia. Like, monsters-in-the-closet paranoia. The biggest knocks on the committee system are that 1) people only get selected for committees from a narrow and self-selecting group. If you're not "in the club", you'll never get picked, and 2) The staff doesn't even listen to committee reports and surveys. Just look at the calendar process! That had no left-right valence, but the committee tried to stack the deck against what most people wanted, the survey confirmed that parents didn't like the committe-preferred option, and the staff proposed that one anyway! APS has actual problems that kind of require actual solutions, but you're over here hiding under your bedsheets because you think a bunch of MAGAts are infiltrating Arlington, Illuminati-style. Doing secret handshakes and whispering "hail Trump" in each others' ears. |
