I have a kid in McGill and she absolutely loves it! We bought a super Duper warm coat and all the gear so she is nice and cozy and is thriving. It's a very art focused community in Montreal and I don't think she's ever gonna leave. Even after graduation.

Long way of saying, if you got the right gear, cold, weather, doesn't bother you. I personally splurged in 2020 when we were all been Covid, safe and doing outdoor events, land got a long Patagonia coat and have not looked back. I now fully understand how we're in the correct gear can protect you from the cold.

McGill is a world class university located in a world class city. Easy to understand why cold weather would not be a deterrent to attending university in this gorgeous & exciting location. (How far is Quebec City from Montreal ? Googled it. 2 hours 45 minutes driving or 3 hours 10 minutes by train.)

Especially true when one can concentrate on other activities instead of focusing on the cold weather.

My niece went to college in the upper Midwest and transferred out back to California because the cold was so bad and the skies were so grey. She’s a smart outgoing girl and was in a sorority but it made her depressed and miserable.

I am currently visiting my family in Minneapolis Minnesota and the temperature for this week will be in the low 30's. Meanwhile, the temperature in Miami for this week will be in the high 70's. It is currently 10 degrees in Minneapolis. It is so depressing here in Minneapolis. Can't wait to be back in Miami on Thursday.

It was in the 40’s yesterday in Miami.

It was like 1 degree in Minneapolis yesterday. I'll take the 40's in Miami over the misery of cold and windy Minneapolis.

Are you literally googling Miami weather to pushback on the Midwest being a miserable dump? Sad.

So one has the option of going to college in the north among people who consider climate as secondary to education, or going to college in the south among people who limited their choice of college based on climate AND insist that other people must be stupid not to make the same choice they did. Actually not a tough decision.

Cold and wind doesn't create misery. Who are you with? What are you doing? Are you getting out to do fun things?

No one expects MN in winter to be like Miami

I just got home from central TX and even they got cold during this storm.

This past week is in no way the norm.

That said, I have to spend this time of year in TX a lot, and it is usually in the 40s or so

+1

Buy a good jacket and it’s not an issue.

All the people saying to just get the right clothes, you underestimate how the gray dreariness and the sun going down super early in places like Boston can be very draining and depressing. It’s a legit concern for many types of personalities.

Yes, I ski, snowmobile, and ice fishing in Minnesota.  When I am not doing those things, I go to the Mall of America.  It is still boring and depressing.

Plenty of people choose Northern colleges because they want “4 seasons” or they “like to ski”, and lots of them, including you, look down on people who make different choices than they do.
