A really odd take by PP. I'm pretty sure "weather at the school the applicant went to" isn't really a factor in hiring decisions. |

There are many many good schools with good weather, Narnia isn't the only place where good schools exist. |
Well, statistically depression and suicide rates are higher in harsh wintery areas. Cornell and U Penn etc are often in news. |
Population and economic declines in the frigid north vs population and economic booms on the coasts and sun belt is certainly going to impact college applications and college statuses going forward. Fact is American kids born in the 00s and 10s are not dreaming of going to college in Buffalo, Cleveland, Rochester, Detroit, Columbus, Indianapolis, Ann Arbor, West Lafayette, Chicago, Bloomington, Milwaukee. They're just not. A snow storm looks pretty on a single instagram photo, it's not fun to live through for 75% of the academic year for four years of college. |
Ma'am, Philly is not a harsh "wintery" city. |
You speak like an old troll. Most of those cities don’t have premier schools located in/near them. Furthermore, who ever dreams of attending college in Indianapolis, Milwaukee, or Detroit? You’re not too smart, you’re just not |
I have no dog in this fight, but there actually ARE good schools (t25 even) in some of those places |
Exactly 3. Chicago, Evanston, and Ann Arbor. |
Ni, but doctors don't want to practice in red states. The shortages will become more and more drastic as time goes on. And not just in obstetrics |
I think it’s cultural. In the US, the maps are seldomly used in the media. For example, in the news they often they describe where the car accident occurred but never show it on a map. They might report that there's a drought in the Midwest but does not show you the map of that region. It’s ironic that in much smaller country like Japan, they’re likely to flash a map on the screen (even for few seconds) to show where on the island the coverage is about. I say, we should advocate to used the map more in the media, school text books, etc. including the DCUM- add a screenshot or give a link to the map. |
Agreed! |
This is what I am worried about, in addition to the threat to birth control methods. |
Down and knee length. Weather proof. I would look in the spring/summer for best pricing. Also if she likes to thrift shop I would tell her to look at winter coats and pick up a couple. At Michigan they use thrift coats as their going out coats in case they get lost or stolen. Big down coat for walking on campus to class etc. |
There are many top 50 and top 100 colleges in-between Rochester, Pittsburgh and Chicago. Most of the B1G Ten is in that frigid Rust Belt region - Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois - plus Carnegie Melon, Case Western, Rochester, Northwestern. But it's just not a place kids are dreaming about spending four years of life concentrated in the coldest months of the year. It's not a place wealthy Americans are clamoring to move to. It's not even a place immigrants want to settle in. It's stagnant. And if you think stagnation, decline and terrible weather bodes well for the future of colleges and universities in that region you're not seeing straight. |
