Maybe you should send your kid to private. Homeschooling is also an option.

Maybe Public Schools should have a sensible schedule. I don't think that we have a month left this year were the kids have a full week of school every week. We have a few were there is only one short week but most have 2-3 weeks that are off or shortened. Say what you will about diversity but many kids need a more stable schedule.

Between Teacher Workdays and Religious holidays and Federal Holidays the kids are out of school in a way that is disruptive. Something needs to change. And yes, I filled out the survey. And I have looked at the survey results and it sure as hell looks to me like most parents are not happy with the schedule.

Actually, the first 3 weeks in December are full weeks.

And then time off so not a full month of school. The Winter Holiday is normal but the disruptions in September and October are new. January and February are traditionally a mess because it is near impossible to get back into a routine due to the various Federal Holidays and then snow days. Now we are extending that with extra days off in April.

The fall used to be reasonably stable but no more.

A complete mess.

My kid is fine but he doesn't have any issues and is chill and goes with the flow well. My friends kid with anxiety and ADHD is having issues with refusal this year because of all the disruptions. I can only imagine the trouble that kids with executive functioning issues are having because there are consistent changes to schedules.

It is unnecessary. Make these days O days where there are no tests or homework or assignments due. Let people who want to miss, miss without punishment, but stop disrupting the routines that are needed for lots of kids.

And if your high school kid needs the extra time to do the work and is stressed about the work load, revisit your kids workload.

Of course you assume that the 2 week "Winter Holiday is normal" because it is the one that works for you. O days were a mess last year, which is why they aren't doing them again.

Yeah, im muslim and having random 2 weeks off at the end of December is totally stupid and unnecessary for me. the weather is terrible, id rather have a longer break in spring/fall when the weather is nicer but there is a major religious holiday that most ppl celebrate and take off for so I think its fine to accommodate them. T. Jefferson had a huge role in shaping how this country was going to look, he planned for this- hindus and muslims and jews and all sorts of others will come here and they'll make this country a roaring success which.. it is compared to everywhere else. Look around you... and dont tell me EU.. EU had 3 devastating wars that they have recovered from b/c of massive mount of remittances from European immigrants who moved here and took office and helped them on a federal level. Those constant wars also taught them some hard lessons in resiliency and we should be thankful we haven't had to learn those lessons.

I grew up in a town that was 90% Catholic, and let me tell you, two weeks for winter break was not normal. Us kids were in school until Dec. 23. You got off starting Dec. 24, and then came back Jan. 2. I think the difference is (and I say this without judgment) that we didn't have a lot of rich families looking to take vacations.

I think it’s fine for high school, but for working parents with younger kids the inconsistent schedule is really hard.

School isn’t daycare, dumbass

This is the worst response. It's the same number of school days, genius.

I agree to some extent with the daycare poster, but please, can we stop the name calling. Imbecile earlier, dumbass now. Why is it necessary? It just makes these forums more toxic

No liberal I know wants the days off. But I'm also not going to come on here and bit-- about it endlessly. Use it to do something beneficial for what are, no doubt, many gripes you have about life.

Just as a counter, I grow up in a town that was mostly catholic and we certainly interacted rarely with non-Catholics (went to Catholic school, family and friends all Catholic). I grew up as Catholic as they come. We had 2 weeks for winter break.

Do you complain about getting off for Christmas???????????????

DP here. Christmas happens to be a Federal holiday and is a day off for almost every organization and business. It also falls during the Winter Break which is not necessarily affiliated with a religion (although of course it encompasses several religious holidays).

Christmas doesn't "happen to be a Federal holiday." Our Christianormative society is designed to accommodate Christian holidays. Winter Break is absolutely affiliated with Christmas.

Hanukkah sometimes happens to (actually happens to) fall during Winter Break, but a. it's not a holiday that Jews need time off for to celebrate, and b. Winter Break doesn't move around to accommodate it when it comes early. Last year Hanukkah started the weekend of Thanksgiving, but we didn't get 2 weeks of Winter Break at the beginning of December.

Kwanzaa falls in Winter Break, but it was created to celebrate pan-African culture as an alternative to Christmas, so the timing of it is based on Christmas. If you were designing a holiday today, wouldn't you put it at a time that is convenient in the dominant calendar too?

It’s terrible for routine and consistency for kids.
Get rid of the 4 day Labor Day weekend (I know, it’s VA law), get rid of Columbus Day, and get rid of Veteran’s Day. The kids don’t need those off.

#FedHolidayOnly #KeepReligionOutOfSchools

Oh, yes, all that religion happening on 10/28, 10/31, 11/8, and 11/11. /s
Wait...[checks notes]

10/28 End of Quarter
10/31 Halloween
11/8 Election Day (a Virginia State Holiday)
11/11 Veterans Day (a Federal Holiday)

I wish some schools were year round around here and we could pick which we'd prefer. I'd like 6 weeks of school followed by 1/2 weeks off. All these random days are killing me.

Btw, I saw all the stands of fireworks for Diwali and that people were buying them like crazy. I was seriously hoping for some firework shows. I do wish that some of these holidays that we get off could be enjoyed by others the way Christmas is.

What do you think non-Christians are enjoying about Christmas? Everything being closed? Mall Santa? Overcrowded movie theaters and shops? "Happy Birthday Jesus" songs (or worse: Wham! every 10 minutes) on the radio for 2 months?
But, sure, the lights are pretty.

+1. Even shorten the winter break. Dec 16th is the last day!!! Christmas isn’t until the 25th.

The O days last year were a disaster and truly school as daycare. Research shows lots of learning loss over the summer. I fully support anything that makes the summer shorter, with a side benefit that kids can learn new content each school day instead of some days being a waste for those who do attend. And bonus, everyone feels included. Win-win.

Your post "might" have had some credibility if you didn't throw that in there.

Name a Christian holiday that isn't part of some other break. Hint - there aren't any.

In fact, there's only one Christian holiday that is part of an existing break and that one is far longer than it needs to be and the entire country takes it off anyway.

You fail.

Both winter break and spring break are often right around Easter and Christmas. What other major Christian holidays are there? So two out of two. I fail to see how that's not catering to the Christian majority.

This is why Christians in this country are losing/have lost all credibility. You arent persecuted. You're just throwing a fit that the world now includes people other than you.

Get rid of President's Day.

Heck, most of the Federal Holidays could be school days.

You're not making sense. What does the number of days have to do with the daycare point? And why are you still being rude?
