Why is fcps making elementary kids drag laptops to/from school?

Need a whole classroom to do that sort of thing.

And how does one do that?

It’s not an optional program, it’s a county initiative. 1 device for every student.

My point exactly. PP is full of shit.

Huh, wonder why there’s an opt-out form on the FCPS website, then.

https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/fcpson/fcpson-technology-support-fee" target="_new" rel="nofollow"> https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/fcpson/fcpson-technology-support-fee

This is for middle /high school and it says you can opt out if you want your child to bring their own device to you. Tech isn’t going anywhere.

The 1:1 program is district wide and so is the opt-out form. I know logic and reason are hard for some of y’all to understand. I love that people keep giving you solutions, but all you want to do is complain. Maybe it’s time for homeschooling? But then I’d be very afraid of any kid schooled by some of y’all.

OK sweetie, so what does your child do when his/her classmates are on their laptops at school? How are they doing research for their social studies projects or putting together slides for their classroom presentation? How are they doing the standardized testing / other assessments? Please tell us, I really want to know.

Do you even hear yourself? Elementar age kids should NOT be making google slides.

Oooooh I see. You didn't opt your kids out, you are just full of shit and deflecting. Loser.

Someone who doesn't think kids need to be making useless slide shows instead of actual learning is a loser?

NP, but real question: you really don’t think building the ability to effectively present data is pertinent learning in 2022? Building slide shows helps kids learn how to present data and reinforces their learning on the topic.

So no one in fcps learned this skill before two years ago when they all got laptops? Hmmmmmmmmmmm

You know they were using computers in the classroom before two years ago, right?

My child's school had a cart per grade and laptops were used maybe once a week. That is the correct amount of usage in ES. Certainly not daily.

Thanks for the tip!

Sure it is. They can do research and present their findings on a poster, in a diorama, or
Handwrite a paper with drawings. There is nothing important about learning to make a slide show on a laptop.

You are living in the 80’s. There are other products kids can make with tech besides Google Slides. They can create videos, websites, books, infographics, etc. Upper ES should absolutely be creating things using technology and using it for research.

What we learned from the virtual debacle is that kids staring at screens aren't learning. They don't need apps to learn to write, research or think.

Sure, it's fine if they work on something once a week, but not good when the bulk of their social studies daily time and grade is on a presentation that requires them to 100% be on the computer. Learning social studies in social studies class should be the priority over learning how to use tech.

I am the PP. I agree with you. Lessons should not be online. Notebooks are important. But posting an article for the kids to read and then take notes is fine.

From what I gather there was a huge spectrum of tech use the past year. Yes, students shouldn’t be learning online. Tech is a tool to enhance learning. Lessons should be paper based but I do believe final written products should be typed and research online is also important. Balance is everything.

Curious to how much tech has been used the first two days. My kid said they logged in yesterday and today used it for 20 mins to research something for an assignment. This is 6th grade. Honestly, I am fine with my kid using tech as long as they are not on it all day.

My 6th grader was on it all day last year. Learned very little, got headaches, lightspeed report listed hundreds of web pages per day, no work
ever came hone, teacher was using those awful slideshows from
Gatehouse.

This was our experience as well. And, my 3rd grader even got the math slides. It sucked!!!!

I teach third grade. Our grade level doesn’t plan on having them log in until next week at the earliest. After that they won’t be using their laptops daily. They didn’t last year. It will vary.

Last year our 5th grader seemed to do a lot of assignments and tests on the laptop. They used paper for math practice, but took the quizzes on the computer.

All my child’s tests and quizzes were on the computer. So no short answers where students have to explain their thinking in any way. Just canned multiple choice questions pulled from a test bank from Horizon. They often didn’t even match instruction.

Why do 3rd graders need to be on laptops at all? These kids missed 1/3rd of K, all of a normal forsr
Grade
and had tons of covid disruptions last year and probably too much laptop time. Let them have one normal year of quality education.

Totally agree. And they didn’t get a chance to learn to write properly with pen and paper. The last thing my son needs is more screen time.
