No, traffic lights are to govern the right of way, not to necessarily fix dangerous conditions. Hopefully Arlington will figure out if Courthouse Road needs traffic calming (narrowing by removing a lane/adding a protected bikelane) and if the left turn there needs to be modified so people can make it more safely. Someone mentioned that they believe the lights are already timed on Courthouse Road so you can't get all greens and build up speed, but if not, that is something that could be done.

I’m not trying to be rude but are you familiar with this intersection? courtHouse Road starts as an offramp at route 50 with a stoplight, one block then a stoplight at the courthouse/bayou bakery. One more block then a stoplight at the intersection where he was coming from at Wilson. One of those lights is generally always red. In my 20 years of living here I’ve been able to go straight off 50 to where the pub is without getting g caught at one of those lights. How someone could get up enough speed to cause it’s kind of accident is certainly bizarre and flabbergasting! I’m wondering if he hit the gas instead of the brake.

This area is one of the highest traffic fatality areas in Arlington. Have a look for yourself.

I think you missed the sarcasm. The driver was coming off of a traffic light. PP said they put another traffic light at the traffic light.

DC area has the highest rate of collisions (though not fatalities) of any area in the entire USA.

Again, you have some sort of rare map impairment. It shows a fatality at the intersection of Clarendon Blvd and N Courthouse Rd. This accident was one block over, at Wilson Blvd and N Courthouse Road.

That is not the "exact" intersection.

I’m not flabbergasted and I don’t know what could have been done to prevent this, but I too don’t think it’s that weird that it happened. People run red lights, people pass out at the wheel, people just do dumb things.

Internalize this: the outcome is going to be that the driver made a mistake and it was an “accident.” there will be no repercussions- maybe a speeding ticket.

I’m sorry to say that you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Nobody even died. The chances of serious charges or safety updates coming out of this are extremely low. If you really want change, check around to find the local community group working on Vision Zero.

4 people were critically injured. 17 sent to the hospital. Interesting how this and an entire establishment destroyed is brushed off but let the local incels hear a whisper about blm setting fire to a trash can.

The same thing happened in DC this past Spring. Except 2 women died. After the initial media reports everything disappeared and there has been no public update on the driver.
