Love the brainwash video they watch before responding to the survey in class.

Do parents have to give permission, or are they forcing this upon the students?

Looks like it’s automatic unless you pay attn and Opt Out.

I wonder if MCPS ran this past their expensive lawyer pool first?

Notification of Rights under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) - Consent before students can be given a survey concerning one or more of the following protected areas (“protected information survey”):
• Political affiliations or beliefs of the student or student’s parent;
• Illegal, anti-social, self-incriminating, or demeaning behavior;
• Religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or parents;

In other word, the survey should have been Opt-In, not Opt-Out?

With 10% of students who have that classification and the difficulties they have had over the last two years to receive accommodations and services, there is a huge need to end discrimination and implicit biases for that population of students.

Don't worry, they discriminated and refused many of our kids before covid. This is nothing new.

Y'all afraid the audit will show racism alive and well in MoCo?

No, I don’t want the personal questions about background my child cannot answer.

More ways to waste tax dollars and take the focus off teaching kids.

At least it isn't as bad as the SRO jobs program.

Where are you seeing that the survey is asking "personal questions about background"?

At the end of the survey it asks for ethnic / cultural identification. I’m sure all the fourth graders are aware of their ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Shouldn’t these surveys just be sent out to white students since they are the only ones who can be racist?

It's an anonymous survey, so the questions aren't exactly "personal." It's aggregated data. And if a student doesn't know or want to answer the questions, they can just skip them. Or the parents can opt them out of the survey altogether.

I think getting kids' impressions of their cultural backgrounds is actually a really interesting question. They live the background they think they have, not the one you think they have.

There is no question about it. Discrimination and targeting of immigrants, people of color and minorities are prevailing in many communities in MoCo.
We have a long way to go. My only issue is we must also focus and promote academic excellence along with the social equity. We cannot ignore one for other.

It definitely is. All the racism and discriminatory practices against Asian Americans is mind blowing.

Kids who are adopted don't always know they're history. The only way we'd know is to do a genetics test and that's not happening as what we know would make it not a good idea. So, asking those questions is also discriminatory.

Lets just say all white kids are racist. No other races can be racist and be done with it. We can kick all the white racist kids and staff out of MCPS and tell their parents to figure it out. Then, when the MCPS issues continue and its still an issue, we look at other societal problems such as lack of structure, discipline and expectations at home as well as parenting and parents behavior.

Also against Jewish students.
