Student should go wherever they beleive they can thrive and find themselves…it doesn’t matter as much as you think it does. And don’t get my laughing on the whole private HS thing…too funny…going to put your kid in therapy… |
Totally agree. Plenty of kids are drawn to the quintessential small colleges located off the beaten path. Rural LACs still hold plenty of appeal. |
Doesn’t have to be a SLAC. There are lots of medium-sized privates, like Wake Forest, that cost $70-$80k. |
Same here. I asked why and she said there is a certain type of student who goes there and left it at that. She's not at all interested in applying. |
The other VA publics draw more of the “hot party girl” /“I post my outfit on TikTok” type. That’s one of the reasons my DD likes W&M. It has more of a “be whoever you are” vibe more like crunchy SLACS. |
Georgetown has a hellish application that requires many supplements and a non-common/coalition app portal. Kids who are just slinging out applications now will apply to almost any other top 30 over Georgetown because of this. I also think the REA hurts Georgetown's application because people like the opportunity to EA. Honestly, popularity is a terrible metric for schools as an easy application will automatically make the school more popular. |
Meh. I would say the other VA publics appeal to students who enjoy having fun, in addition to getting a good education. |
| Expensive private schools. Not worth the money. |
It all depennds on the majors. Go to UVA and major in psychology vs go to NYU Stern and major in Business or go to Carnegie Mellon and major in Computer Science. Let's see what would be more expensive after graduation LOL |
Wouldn’t say crunchy. Different vibe…yes…SLAC…sure. Not sure about the crunch. It appeared to be unique to us. |

My dd wouldn’t consider applying to UVA and ended up at W&M (her other options were Slacs.) I’d say she’s brainy but repulsed by the heavy frat and party scene. She is fairly sophisticated in her tastes so that might be part of it.

Oh yes. Nobody would want to go to a school that has one of the best combinations of academics and athletics in the country |
This ^^^ plus any school in Texas (for women) |
Texas is out for men or women, Just no. |
