DS mentioned it as a possible place he might apply, but we're not encouraging it. I don't get why a kid from another part of the country would go to a big state school somewhere else, unless you have or want to create some tie to that area.

Actually Madison is a better college town, has the lakes and is generally more beautiful and lively than Ann Arbor.

They are both great college towns. I’ve never heard any graduate of Michigan sigh that they didn’t go to Wisconsin.

This. Someone is trying too hard, and it shows.

And most Wisconsin grads don’t regret not going to Michigan.

How can they "regret" not going somewhere they were rejected?

Because they never applied to Michigan in the first place because they wanted to go to Wisconsin. No matter how desperately you want it to be so, Wisconsin is not a backup school to Michigan for the vast majority of students.

The vast majority of Wisconsin students are instate paying instate tuition. For out of state students, Wisconsin is a backup school as compared to Michigan. Sorry, but that’s just the way it is.

There are plenty of applicants who simply prefer UW to UM. Nothing wrong with that. There are also plenty who apply to both. Since UM does yield protect, there are many who are high stats who don't get in to UM but do to UW and then matriculate.

The fact is, if you are from the coasts and attended a small private high school, and want that "big school" experience with strong academics, there are not many better options that have the combination of both.

Going out to Madtown this weekend for Homecoming and Halloween. I attended in the 80s and now I am lucky that one of my kids is there. He absolutely loves it and we could not be happier for him. It is a special place—great school spirit, Wisconsin “nice” vibe, great academics, college town second to none and big time athletics. There is something for everyone and it is silly to try to put down any other schools to make WI seem superior.

I think that a few posters are trying to put down Wisconsin to make other schools superior, not the other way around so much. But great shoutout to Wisconsin! Glad your son is enjoying it!

UCLA? Florida? Georgia? UNC? Duke?

UCLA - better academics, athletics are generally on par, not as big a party school
Florida - bigger football but not academics or party
GA - Nope
UNC - better academics, but no to the other two
Duke is a small private school with a big hoops program and thats about it.

Wisconsin is a nice school, but please try to be serious.

UCLA's academics are stronger than Wisconsin's and the "party deficit" you see exists because there's so much more to do in LA than drink! Clever spin to try to elevate keg stands above skiing in the morning, surfing in the afternoon, and world class entertainment at night, but just no.

Florida no longer trails Wisconsin in academics and its sports programs are stronger generally, not just in football. And those kids also do nearly as many keg stands as the Badgers do.

Georgia's athletics are clearly stronger (#1 football team in the country; Wisconsin will be lucky to finish the season above .500) and academics are pretty much on par. Athens is a great college town; individual preference whether it's better than Madison.

UNC's sports are on par with Wisconsin's. (I'm actually not sure its academics are better.)

Duke's academics are clearly superior and basketball is legendary.

And you ducked Texas, which basically is Madison with better weather and racial diversity.

And virtually fill in the blank school is no doubt better than where you went, no?

So you obviously have a very massive bone to pick and you would argue that basically any random school in the country is better than Wisconsin. Enough already. No one cares about whether Georgia has better athletics or School X has better this or that.

Oh, of course, we go again! You people are so predictable! Bet you wouldn’t say that about Massachusetts, Vermont, Arlington, or any other prized DCUM bastion of whiteness. But, hey, go ahead and sh!t on the “flyover state.”

Is this third response your best and final? Because it's blather. Read the chain. A Wisconsin booster set out the criteria s/he thinks makes Wisconsin #1. A number of specific (not random) schools were offered as potentially besting Wisconsin on the criteria chosen by the booster. The booster pushed back, largely by overstating Wisconsin's relative academic and athletic strengths and then got called on the overstatements. And then you had your little conniption.
