Almost all of the former pensions were closed out or converted for some to 401k's. Almost no one has pensions or stock ownership anymore.

If you have a 401k (and not everyone does), you hold stocks directly or indirectly...

Of course. But the percentage of Americans with 401k's is small.

How much is a house in Norway?

How much are groceries?

How much more is a car in Norway?

What is the effective tax rate?

Yes, they have great social services, but housing, food, clothing, cars all cost considerably more than here.

Also, there are also more ethnic Norwegians living in the United States than in Norway!

And yet! They are ranked as the happies country in the world. Despite the high price of living there! Huh. Maybe there’s more to happiness than lower taxes.

Check out the price of a gallon of milk. Check out the price of a house...

Check out the price of health care.

Heck I’d gladly pay more for a gallon of milk for this kind of life- sounds wonderful.

Working for the feds would be your best bet, or you could do us all a favor and move there.

You must not be paying attention. The Democratic party is fighting to save universal health care as a right, not a privilege, protect the environment from being sold to corporate interest, protecting a women's right to equal pay for equal work, and to safeguard the sanctity of our elections from foreign interlopers all of which have been gutted under the Trump administration (which refuses to adhere to ethics norms). Yes, saving young people from being deported from the only home they've ever known is a priority, but far from the only one.

How can the Dems "save" universal health care and equal pay for women when it doesn't exist. Your guy, Obama, couldn't get it done

Lol, dems gave up their DACA deal to pursue sh*thole-gate!

Send those illegals back to Central America where they belong!

At least he tried. What have the Rs tried to do? They couldn't even repeal ACA with all three branches controlled by the conservatives and with 6 years to figure out something else more viable. That's even more pathetic, but then, "who knew healthcare was so complicated".

Trumpers abhor everything Norway stands for, except its whiteness.

+100 And they don't have a gun culture like we do; they don't ever try to legislate what a woman does with her body or whom you have sex with; they have generous parental leave. All things anti-R.

My FIL was all on the “let’s import Norwegians!” train until he realized they are likely to be more liberal and may vote Dem. he’s looking for a new prosperous yet conservative nationality to get behind now.

Yeah! Maybe we can import more Norwegians along with those from shithouse countries. Let them shake up American culture.

The President of the United States has no business calling any foreign nation a "shithole"!!! For God's sake, people, have you no sense of decency left? These are our allies, our trade partners and the homelands of millions of American citizens.

There is no discussion on this - trump was WRONG.

He was wrong, but that doesn't make it a racist statement. The people calling it a racist statement (cnn,MSNBC,etc.) wonder why people don't see them as being credible. They will literally spend hours obsessing over one comment.

Everyone knows the sentiment behind the words was racist, bigoted, uninformed, you name it: he not only denigrated two places whose citizens are dark-skinned, hd asked why we allow citizens from those countries to immigrate to the US. What is he saying to you about those citizens? I know what I hear.

Just curious--how would you describe countries (NOT the people) from which so many citizens are trying to leave due to the conditions there?

Conflict zone. Disaster area. Economically depressed region. Plenty of fine terms

All of which makes them less than appealing for long-term residency. Re Haiti, you could also toss in repression, starvation, brutality and cruel torture (thanks to Baby Doc Duvalier et al). Sounds like hell to me.

+100
I started a thread last night asking if anyone here had ever traveled - for pleasure - to Haiti or African countries. And if not, why? I see that thread was deleted. And yet there are multiple threads about the alleged "shithole" remark. Interesting that there appears to be NO ONE who will willingly and honestly answer my question, but plenty of people who want to keep up the outrage about the alleged "shithole" comment.

“African countries.” Egypt, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, Congo, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Tanzania, South Africa? Idiot.

Not sure why you felt the need to list the above countries. I said "African countries" and anyone with any sense knows what they are; you left out quite a few. Clearly, you're not one of those people.

Are you implying the above countries are not African?

At any rate I have to laugh at your implication that no one travels to African countries. I have quite a few friends who have traveled to many different countries in Africa and they all loved their experiences. I haven't yet because it hasn't been in my budget, but a lot of those listed above are on my bucket list. You are delusional if you think those aren't places anyone wants to visit. In fact, I can't even fathom the small-mindedness of someone uninterested in seeing the pyramids or going on a safari.

Regarding the bolded, umm - no? I was wondering why the PP (you?) felt the need to list some African countries and not others. When I said, "African countries," I was referring to all the countries in Africa, yet you seem to have selected only a few. How about Rwanda, South Sudan, Yemen, Central African Republic, etc.? Have any desire to vacation in those places? And you never did respond re: Haiti. When do you plan to vacation there? And if never, why?

And yes, while Egypt is technically an African country, most people think of it as part of the Middle East.

Anonymous wrote:I'm a little confused about how people claim we can't help refugees in this country because we have enough poor people here.

First off, when the US was accepting refugees from war torn Europe, the US wasn't exactly doing well economically then either.
Secondly, Trumpsters keep saying our economy is great thanks to Trump - low unemployment, rising stock market, etc... but still we are not rich enough to help refugees.
Third, if we wait till we are "rich" enough, and there are no poor Americans, then we would *never* accept any refugees because we are not a socialist country, and therefore, we will *always* have poor people. And then we wouldn't have people like one of the founders of Google (who came here as a refugee) and other great people in the US who came as refugees.

I'm willing to bet that some of these same people who criticize these *sh1tholes* are descendants of people who came here as refugees from other sh1thole countries.

My ancestors definitely came here from shithole countries. The difference is, they had zero safety net to help them out here. They worked their fingers to the bone with NO assistance, to provide for their families. They neither demanded nor received any handouts.

Can you say the same about today's refugees? How about those who are here illegally?

Exactly. No one has explained to me why, if these countries are not sh*tholes, they get millions of our foreign aid money.

We need a merit based system that is *enforced*. Our system with poor enforcement, is now rewarding law breakers.

I believe we should be generous to the so-called Dreamers, provided that the system will become enforcement and merit based.

Well said. I agree. I have family members who waited years to come here - legally - and years afterwards to become U.S. citizens. Who knew they could have just jumped the line?!

I recommend you start reading some decent news sources so keep yourself informed of world events. New York Times has done some great articles about conflicts, droughts, and natural disasters that lead to mass migrations of people trying to escape tyranny, war, starvation, etc. Same for Washington Post, The Atlantic, NPR, PBSNewsHour, BBC. Check out foreign newspapers online to get broader international coverage.

If you find the writing to be above your reading level, BuzzFeed often has really well done lists that provide insight into foreign afffairs. No joke.

Check it out - you'll learn something!

Wow. You're not officious or patronizing in the least.

Well, as far as the US is concerned, the refugee crisis from Central America started during the Carter/Reagan administration. The US stuck their noses into their civil war, and helped create the refugee crisis.

https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/central-americans-and-asylum-policy-reagan-era

In 1990, after its earlier frustrations to address the Central American asylum seekers, Congress finally passed legislation allowing the president (Bush Sr) to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to certain groups in need of a temporary safe haven. The first TPS legislation contained one provision (never codified as part of the Immigration and Nationality Act) explicitly designating Salvadorans for TPS.

Through the early 1990s, Salvadoran and Guatemalans who had arrived in the 1980s were able to stay in the country under a series of discretionary measures and under the terms of the 1991 settlement in the American Baptist Churches litigation. It was not until the late 1990s that their status was finally settled in a legislative agreement with the supporters of the anti-Sandinista Nicaraguans. The passage of the 1997 Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act finally allowed Salvadorans and Guatemalans protected under the American Baptist Churches settlement to apply for permanent residence.

What spurred the activism of the Sanctuary Movement and Central American refugees and their lawyers was the manner in which the Reagan administration linked the fate of individual asylum seekers to its foreign policy interests. Today, the use of immigration enforcement as a "magic bullet" for national security concerns requires close examination by the U.S. public.

From the same article: "The year 1980 marked the opening of a decade of public controversy over U.S. refugee policy unprecedented since World War II. Large-scale migration to the United States from Central America began, as hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans, Guatemalans, and Nicaraguans fled north from civil war, repression, and economic devastation. That same year, in the last months of the Carter administration, the U.S. Congress passed the Refugee Act, a humanitarian law intended to expand eligibility for political asylum in the United States."

The flow to the USA started with 100's of thousands in the Carter administration. The USA has always had an illegal immigration issue with Mexico.
What should the US have done? Full scale invasion and martial law ?

I'm just tired of the illegal immigration issue which seems to be the sole priority of my Democratic Party. Frankly my last straw was the surge of unaccompanied minors after Obama 's executive order on DACA. If all are in school, just on a building capacity basis, here's the volume:
Montgomery County MD-1 high school and 2 middle schools . Same for FX and PG for a grand total of 3 high schools and 6 middle schools .

Or think of it as 5 high schools. Does MD give extra money? VA did not. FEDS don't pay except a paltry amount. Vermont got 5 over almost 4 years. Hawaii 19 and Idaho 80. Each of those 3 states has very verbal and loud politicians in the senate. Durbin 's state of Illinois got 1845. The 3 DMV area counties have 13,000 plus which means we have a larger illegal or legal or TSP population for their release through the feds.

Fairfax County has the 6th highest per county in the nation. Note it is in the midlantic area NOT like southern CA or TX with historical border crossings with Mexico.

Well said.
