DC Public and Public Charter Schools
Disagree. We welcome these families at BASIS. They care about their kids’ education, and it’s nice to have friends in the neighborhood. Signed, A Watkins Parent Who Isn’t at Stuart Hobson |
The problem isn’t that you are seen as unneeded. The problem (and I’m not speaking about you personally) is that some of the UMC people look down on the at risk students. One person on that townhall even used the words “dilute our population.” And those comments stand out, even if they aren’t representative of a community as a whole. |
There are some. Not enough to produce the integration and the academics outcomes anyone would be happy with. Especially if the performance of E-H goes down, which it likely will if people aren't willing to attend the new cluster. |
We have asked DME and DCPS, and they haven't said UMC families are an asset. They have only said that they want to balance the SES. I agree with PP who said that DME and DCPS probably find UMC families to be PITAs, and want them out. |
You must be new here is you think DCPS is doing this in a reasoned or thoughtful way. Want to talk about renovations? JOW is slated for renos next year. Why would they renovate a school now only to decide later to make it a cluster? P.S. "Nothing to indicate they won't" is a cure turn of phrase that has no meaning. There are a lot of things in this world that COULD happen. For instance, there's nothing to indicate you won't learn some humility. I wouldn't bet on it, but it could happen. |
If you want to talk about putting a school’s families down, just read this thread or the transcript of the townhall. You’ll see it isn’t the Maury families who are on the receiving end of the negative comments. |
+1. Are UMC people really an asset? This thread makes me think otherwise. |
| Is there another part of this anonymous forum where parents can go to insult and belittle each other? |
I guess it depends on what your goals are. If it’s rigorous academics and good test scores, a well funded PTA and generally good behavior, then yes, UMC families are an asset… |
that’s literally what the DME wants to do: dilute the high SES population. |
And if it’s to ensure that EVERY child, not just the UMC kids, get a good education then maybe not so much? |
All the parts except the Special Needs board. |
| Why don't all the parents at high performing Hill elementaries that WANT the Maury/Miner cluster just enter the lottery and put Miner #1. Do the experiment. Put your money where your mouth is. |
| I am so disheartened by the anonymous Karens up in this thread about how Maury is going to be destroyed when combined with Miner. Geez- can they sit at the same lunch counter at the Roost too? All evidence shows that kids do well when they are in racially and socioeconoimcally diverse schools. 1% white kids at Maury will benefit from not living in an educational bubble, as will socioecoonomcally disadvantaged Black kids at Miner. And problems in our community will improve when integration occurs. The segregation that has resulted between the two schools cannot persist. In bounds for Miner and a former Moner family, there are wonderful families, Black and White, wealthy, poor and middle class, at Miner. I sure thought I was in Biloxi for a moment, not Capitol Hill. |
Anyone who isn't determined to think the worst about somebody for the very great sin of disagreeing with him would have understood what that person meant and that it was not meant to be personally disparaging toward Miner students or families. We can't have a conversation if someone phrases an idea arguably poorly and you jump at the opportunity to call them racist or classist or ableist (or disgusting or a number of other charges that have been carelessly leveled at Maury parents on this thread). |
