| We have an opportunity to fly into Brussels in mid-July. We'll be traveling with our teenage daughter. We've done the big cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen. We are leaning toward Salzburg and the Lake District, though also think Alsace could be fun (but maybe too much of the samething for a week there?). Any ideas? Teen is not into museums, so though Austria would be neat for more scenery. Anyone have suggestions on things to do, places to see? (or even suggestions for some other European destination - we are really open to anything right now) |
Siwtzerland - the Alps. |
| We did Salzburg and Tegernsee - it was great. Town is cute and it is easy to rent bikes or walk around - we did some nice day hikes. Beautiful!!! |
| The sound of music bike touring Salzburg was a blast. Highly recommend! If you have a car, you could drive to Munich and stop at the eagles Nest. |
The cognitive dissonance in this post hast to be intentional. |
Salzburg is beautiful, I would pair it with another city like Innsbruck or Vienna. You could easily entertain yourselves in Vienna for the full 6 days if you wanted to do that (trying to visit all three cities I think would be too much in 6 days). If you wanted to go to Salzburg and the lakes you'd need to rent a car or hire a driver, if you stuck to the major cities you could travel everywhere by train. |
Ha! I am not the PP but we did all of these things on our trip (+ Dachau). I found Eagles Nest to be interesting and thought that they did a good job of describing the history in a way that did not glorify Hitler. BTW, we did all these things on the train, did not rent a car. Also, we did a tour of the Salt Mines near Salzburg that was really fun - if you do that I recommend doing it through a bus tour company and not on your own (we got to skip the lines for the salt mines). |
Our thought was to fly into Munich from Brussels on arrival day (we’ll arrive very early from an overnight). Perhaps we should do Munich and Salzburg, with day trips to the lakes? AI tells me we can easily get around by public transport, but not sure that’s accurate. We thought about Switzerland too, and that could be still be on the table. I think we were concerned we wouldn’t have enough time as it seems there is more to do. |
| We did Paris, Munich, Salzburg for the sound of music tour and Vienna two summers ago with our young teen. Definitely Salzburg and Vienna over Munich! |
| Ok I’m pivoting and now looking at Switzerland. We can get a flight from Brussels to Zurich pretty easily. Any thoughts on 6 days in Switzerland? |
|
In Switzerland go to Interlaken / Grindelwald. You can do that without cars and it is gorgeous. It is crowded and expensive though but the scenery is worth it.
For Austria we loved Salzburg and Zell am See. Much cheaper and beautiful (and better food in my opinion) but you need a car to really get around well. Scenery is great but not quite as dramatic as Switzerland. |
Agree. Austria is 80% the scenery at 65% the price. Switzerland has the edge in dramatic scenery but Zell am See is gorgeous and go swim in the lake. Also check out the salt mines. Munich-Salzburg-Zell am See makes a nice trip. You can do this by train (we did). Just be aware Zell am See is hugely popular with Gulf Arabs in the summer. |
Agree with all the comments about Austria v. Switzerland, I absolutely love Austria but the public transport, while good in Austria, is better in Switzerland. Prices are also much higher. If that's not a concern, my two favorite cities that haven't been mentioned are Lucerne and Lugano, you can easily go to both in 6 days and probably throw in a third like Grindenwald/Lauterbrunnen/Interlaken (all very near each other) |
| Another thought is Slovenia. Ljubljana is a fantastic city to tour. You can go climbing in the Alps and even slip over to Venice pretty easily. |
| You could also easily go to Budapest from Slovenia. Another amazing city to see. |
