In Switzerland go to Interlaken / Grindelwald. You can do that without cars and it is gorgeous. It is crowded and expensive though but the scenery is worth it. For Austria we loved Salzburg and Zell am See. Much cheaper and beautiful (and better food in my opinion) but you need a car to really get around well. Scenery is great but not quite as dramatic as Switzerland.
Agree. Austria is 80% the scenery at 65% the price. Switzerland has the edge in dramatic scenery but Zell am See is gorgeous and go swim in the lake. Also check out the salt mines. Munich-Salzburg-Zell am See makes a nice trip. You can do this by train (we did). Just be aware Zell am See is hugely popular with Gulf Arabs in the summer.
