Looking for comparable schools in selectivity and vibe to Wake and W&M.
Male, full pay, white. Interested in economics and environmental studies. 4 ECs that match major; several leadership in school. Several real jobs (summer only) 1 natl accolade Test optional for now (1400) but retaking 2 more times. Elite private east coast school. 3.7uw (upward trend, but tough freshman year) Wake (ED0) W&M W&L Colby Richmond SMU |
| ED Middlebury |
|
Colgate, Lafayette, Sewanee, Furman, Davidson
|
| At 1400+, if he loves Wake and applies ED0, he has a good shot. |
| And he should report the score. |
|
Colgate, Davidson, Lehigh, Lafayette, maybe Hamilton
You can submit 1400 to some on your list. I’d ask them directly if you should submit. |
| I think the list is good and realistic. Admissions genuinely is easier for boys. |
| A 1400 at an “elite” private? Wow. That’s a public school score. How is the private “elite?” |
|
You have some good suggestions here.
I'd add F&M, Trinity, and Holy Cross. |
The average SAT at a public school is 1000. The average at a top private is typically 1450. OP is below average at their school. Why is this surprising? |
Isn't that a stretch? |
If he’s in top 30 to 40 percent of class grade wise from a top private, no. But doesn’t sound like a good fit for a kid who wants southern. At our private, this kid would definitely get into Davidson and Boston College ED. I think w and l and Richmond are good suggestions. |
Not this year. The acceptance rate 2026 increased to 17% overall. In previous years, the overall AR was as low as 10%. ED1 or ED2, check both Fall start and Febmester option. |

With respect to your son's interest in environmental studies, this site may offer you ideas for colleges to research further:
https://www.collegetransitions.com/blog/best-colleges-for-environmental-science/ Note that the site, while adequate in many respects, is not perfect, however. For example, it omitted Colby. |
Average private school test score is 1235, while public is 1060. Compare apples to apples. |
