Ok, just tried one of these today after a friend recommended it and it’s literally the best protein shake I have ever had. I recognize that it has some not great ingredients (like carrageenan), but overall it seems to have a great calorie to protein ratio, its low carb and lactose free.
Am I missing something here that makes it secretly horrible for you? |
|
No. I love them
|
|
I'm pretty sure carrageenan is fine for humans unless they have a sensitivity to it. In which case, yeah, avoid it. But it's not harmful unless it's actively harming you, you know?
Honestly protein bars and shakes aren't meant to be a regular thing anyway - my dietician says they're not meals, just for when you're in a time crunch or on the go. So just have one or two a week and it's probably fine. |
| My teenage son likes them. They are expensive though. |
| I get the 12 pack 42g protein drinks from Amazon for about $50. |
That's what my DH drinks! He loves them. Gave them to his dying father too so he could eat something. I drink the Koia Protein drinks, also ordered from amazon $42. |
| The artificial sweetener makes it taste gross to me. |
Yeah, they have artificial sweeter and artificial flavor that aren’t great for you. Fine to have once in a while, but I wouldn’t be drinking these daily. I know people that drink multiple per day, insane. Don’t do that. |
Why? |
Empty calories. Junk. If you want a treat, fine. If you want nutrition, choose something else. |
| Don't drink your calories. Chewing is important for overall health: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260514-the-hidden-health-benefits-of-chewing |
Frequent consumption of artificial sweeteners is linked to 30% increased risk of developing metabolic disorders: metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, diabetes type II and cardiovascular disease https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11501561/ These drinks should be a once in a while thing- like pick up at a gas station on a road trip. They should be purchased in bulk at Costco and guzzled multiple times per day |
42 g of protein and 3 g fiber in 240 calories is not exactly "empty calories"
But I take it you also thing drinking any calorie is bad. For someone trying to to lose weight, sure, protein from a chicken breast would probably be better because it could potentially more filling. However, for someone who is very active, struggling to maintain or gain weight, and gets full quickly from most foods these protein drinks are a great supplement. |
I still disagree. Consuming those calories in a whole food product like beans, nuts, fruit, vegetables, grains- you’d get the vitamins, fiber, along with the protein - and no artificial sweeteners! |
I don't disagree that whole food are better, however, for someone like an athlete who struggles to consume enough calories because they get full too quickly from whole foods, these types of supplements are great. |
