I have (belatedly, embarrassingly, and disappointedly) learned that our school does not cover division at all in third grade. I had thought division was one of the core math concepts that would be covered. Is it as unusual as it seems to me that a school would not cover division in third grade?
At this point, I suppose I should not be surprised, given the myriad and pervasive shortcomings of our school, but I am still quite surprised. |
| I have no idea if it’s common but my 2nd grader is currently working on multiplication and division. It would seem crazy to me that 3rd is not. |
| Previous poster. In school. That was not a humble brag of our smart my kid is. It is part of the 2nd grade math in focus book. |
Understood. Op here, i also find it crazy/alarming. Feeling like I got duped for having confidence in the school. |
| Current 3rd grade parent and our school has covered division. Goal for the end of the year is for kids to fully master their 1-12 multiplication tables, but I'm not sure what the end of year benchmark is for division. But they've been practicing division for a couple of months at least. |
| What math program is in use? Even relatively slow programs like "Rod and Staff" or "Study Time" cover long division in 3rd. |
Illustrative math. |

A Google search shows that they do cover division in 3rd grade:
https://im.kendallhunt.com/k5/teachers/grade-3/unit-4/practice.html IM focuses on conceptual understanding, so it likely looks really different than when you learned math. If you're looking for the procedural approach of programs like Russian math, you're at the wrong school (I know RM is supplemental) |
The IM curriculum does, but for whatever reason, it seems our school does not. |
| What school, OP? Maybe someone has some personal experience or insight. |
| I'd be shocked if your child didn't have at least some exposure in third grade-- maybe it just hasn't been explicitly defined as division? Third grade should cover equal groups (multiplication) somewhat early in the year and then move to how it relates to division (how many groups/how many in each group). |
| My youngest is in 2nd grade at MCPS, and they just finished multiplication and have started division. |
Same here except mine is in the “mid high” math grouping and they are shooting for 1-15 mastery in multiplication. I don’t know why OP’s school wouldn’t cover division unless they do a new math system that emphasizes manipulatives and multiples ways of solving the same thing, which maybe is taking more time right now with the view of tackling division next year? But they I’m not sure how they would catch up over the next few years. OP, you should ask for the curriculum goals for grades 3-5. |
Are you sure your school does not, and it’s not just that your kid’s teacher had a particularly disruptive group this year (or ineffective teacher) and didn’t get to division even though they were supposed to? I think division and fractions are typically covered toward the end of the year. |
just teach your kid division. |
