This is the rankings from CSrankings. How accurate are they for UMD? According to this, UMD has a top 10 department. I know it is hard to get into and just looking for real world people. Nothing against US News, Forbes etc. Something like Computer Science is so different than sociology.
1.Carnegie Mellon University 2.University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 3.University of California, San Diego 4.Georgia Institute of Technology 5.Massachusetts Institute of Technology 6.University of Michigan 7.University of Washington 8.University of California, Berkeley 9.Cornell University 9.University of Maryland, College Park 11.Northeastern University 11.Stanford University 13.Purdue University 14.New York University 14.University of Texas at Austin 16.University of Wisconsin–Madison 17.Princeton University 18.University of Pennsylvania 19.Columbia University 20.University of California, Los Angeles |
I agree this list makes sense except for umd, it shouldnt be there, umd is more like uva a genarally good state school for everything. honestly i would swap it out w/ virginia tech |
what are you smoking. UMD is absolutely great for CS, better than UVA or Vtech. The list is based on research and publication - "CSRankings is a metrics-based ranking of top computer science institutions based on faculty publications at selective conferences". So, the list moves a bit month to month based on publication, but UMD is generally always T10 on that list. Research is important because it can lead to cutting edge research which means the professors may have leading edge knowledge, and in turn, real world applications. |
No one thinks of UVA or Va Tech as being tops for CS. |
I’ll never understand why people like you decide to comment on things you have no clue about. Classic DCUM I guess |
| yeah umd shouldnt be there its not better than stanford, someone thinks cause google guy went there its supposed to be good |

This ranking is accurate and arguably better than US News.
Csranking is purely based on CS related publications and large universities have an advantage by having more professors publishing papers. Only top conferences are counted. It is impressive to see small universities like Carnegie Mellon and MIT at top. Having a 1/4 of the big state universities faculty are producing significant research and publish papers. |
CS prof here. CSranking is strictly about faculty' s research output in particular conferences/journals, not at all related to education quality. In this metric, this ranking is very accurate for UMD. UMD has been a top-10 CS research department and graduate program. All the CS faculty is internationally well known. |

It seems like a reasonable list, and UMD is reasonably placed.
Ignore the Virginia people - they get their panties in a bunch easily if they aren'tat the top of every list. |
That's what I'm thinking. US News tries to be all things to all people. Although UMD ranks high there also. |
| Four years ago, this list had UMD as #23. Same as Harvard.. |
| I feel like back when I was a CS major Stanford had a much higher reputation than where it falls on this list. |
Now Harvard is 39 on that list, tied with Hopkins and Yale. If you're an undergraduate student does this list even matter? |
GMU is 33 - so if you are an undergrad at GMU you do feel slightly better. Not sure if anyone else cares. |
| What's GMU? Harvard CS department is small. Not surprising it is at 39. Nobody goes to Harvard for CS. |
