I miss brisk summer mornings

Anonymous
I live in the DC area now (for 20+ years) but grew up in the mountains. This morning I remembered how, in the summer, it would be brisk in the morning until 10am or so. Like in the 50s, sometimes even cooler. I have these very distinct memories of leaving the house for day camp, tennis lessons, or on vacation, and it being cold enough to get goose bumps. I was a kid, so of course I toughed it out in shorts and sandals, but we'd also wear oversized sweatshirts just for the morning if we had to.

This morning it was cool enough that I was reminded of those mornings and that very specific feeling of brisk air coming through before it got nice and hot. It's an extremely specific sort of weather that this area just doesn't get because of the humidity -- by the time it's warm enough to start having hot days, it's also humid enough that it never gets particularly chilly even in the early morning hours.

Can anyone else relate? Makes me want to plan a trip to the mountains!

Yes but mine are New England memories. Height of summer and I did not want to get into the lake for swimming lessons because it was very chilly!

Taking off your pants and sweatshirt on the sand and trying to tough it into the water at 7 or 8 years old. Hopefully it resulted in me being a Resilient Person!

That sounds like magic. I grew up in FL, MS, and NC. And then moved here. At least in FL and NC there was an ocean breeze.

It was great. I took it for granted at the time (probably complained about it! I'm a perpetually cold person and as a kid I hated being chilly) but now that I've had years of waking to 80 or 90 degree heat, I miss it.

I'm not sure it's the same anymore, though. My mom claims it doesn't get as cool at night in the summer anymore.

I remember this from northern (not UP) Michigan.

Same. But what I really miss are cool summer evenings where you had to put on a sweatshirt…

Yes, that's lovely weather!

I'm from upstate NY, and it's often like that. 50 in the morning, 70 in the afternoon. Clean, crisp air.

What are you going to do later this summer, OP, when the DC area is a swamp 24/7?

This is why I will never retire here. I love my neighborhood and my neighbors, but I hate summers and early fall.

Me too. I remember it being so cold for swimming lessons in August. I do try to get to Maine at least once per summer so that I can remember.

I miss cool Summer evenings in New England but they barely exist these days. So many of the houses in RI, MA and even ME have A/C now because the climate has changed so much. I ROASTED on Cape Ann last Summer

I grew up in New England too. And remember cool mornings and nights. Occasional heat waves. Only lasted a few days. Not so much now. I miss it.

We visited my parents’ home in that area in summer. My favorite part was having open windows overnight—best sleeping ever! Quiet, just the sounds of nature.

We're closer to this than you think--the Catoctin mountains feature mornings like this, and they're only an hour and a half away.

Maybe these type of mornings also bring back good childhood memories for you as well. ❤️

Yeah one summer I went to my friend’s family’s lake house at Deep Creek Lake. It was early August and the mornings were cold and that week it didnt get out of the 60s.
