I live in the DC area now (for 20+ years) but grew up in the mountains. This morning I remembered how, in the summer, it would be brisk in the morning until 10am or so. Like in the 50s, sometimes even cooler. I have these very distinct memories of leaving the house for day camp, tennis lessons, or on vacation, and it being cold enough to get goose bumps. I was a kid, so of course I toughed it out in shorts and sandals, but we'd also wear oversized sweatshirts just for the morning if we had to. This morning it was cool enough that I was reminded of those mornings and that very specific feeling of brisk air coming through before it got nice and hot. It's an extremely specific sort of weather that this area just doesn't get because of the humidity -- by the time it's warm enough to start having hot days, it's also humid enough that it never gets particularly chilly even in the early morning hours. Can anyone else relate? Makes me want to plan a trip to the mountains!
That sounds like magic. I grew up in FL, MS, and NC. And then moved here. At least in FL and NC there was an ocean breeze.
It was great. I took it for granted at the time (probably complained about it! I'm a perpetually cold person and as a kid I hated being chilly) but now that I've had years of waking to 80 or 90 degree heat, I miss it. I'm not sure it's the same anymore, though. My mom claims it doesn't get as cool at night in the summer anymore.
