Facial hair growth in women?

Anonymous
This is embarrassing, but I’m wondering what causes facial hair growth in women and how I can slow or stop the growth entirely (instead of just removing it). I have hair above my upper lip that is so coarse and dark (black!). I always remove it, but I swear that I’d have a full-blown mustache if I didn’t. I don’t grow male-pattern hair like this anywhere else on my body.

The go-to answers seem to be PCOS, obesity, and menopause, but I do not have PCOS, I have a normal BMI, and I am not anywhere near close to menopause. There HAS to be an underlying cause, right?!

Genetics
Elevated hormones like testosterone.
control it with threading, waxing, laser hair removal, electrolysis. If hormonal prescription creams, hormonal birth control.

Extra testosterone, just dark hair. Get it lasered off. I saw a woman the other day with a mustache and I could not stop staring or wondering why she doesn't remove it.

How can you be this clueless about the basic things? It's hormones and genetics. I've been a hairy beast since I was 11.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to get electrolysis in Montgomery County?

I think people are mixing up normal hair growth that everyone has with abnormal excessive masculine hair growth. OP is referring to the latter. I have the same problem as the OP and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because the hair on my head and the rest of my body is blonde and relatively fine, almost like peach fuzz. It’s only in that one spot that it’s dark and thick. If it was genetics, you’d think that it would be consistent and I’d be hairy all over.

I’ve personally had my hormone levels, including testosterone, tested and they were well within normal ranges.

Professional laser helps a lot, but will not eliminate all hair. I thread or shave with a face razor for women, then hit the new spot with a home laser

This is not a thing. All hair growth is normal. You've just been conditioned by the media to think that women shouldn't have hair. Your lab test proves my point.

Having arm(pit), leg, and pubic hair is normal for a woman. Being able to grow a beard or a mustache as a woman is definitely not normal. There’s even a medical term for it: hirsutism.

It's a 100% normal. You're just ignorant and have internalized misogyny and probably a fair amount of racism as well.

I agree. There are plenty of women, including me, who have to deal with an unibrow, mustache, and some chin hairs. There is an entire market of lasers, waxes, and other hair-removal products targeted at us because it's a big thing. The counter is that I still have a full, thick head of hair where some women my age are balding.

I have this issue but on my chin. The conclusion is that I have elevated androgen (male hormone) levels. I’ve been told that the only solution is to start taking an anti-androgenic hormonal birth control pill (Yaz, Yasmin, Loryna, etc.). I haven’t done it because I’m worried about the side effects. This type of birth control (containing drospirenone) is known for creating a higher risk of blood clots.

You have to be careful because some brands of the birth control pill are highly androgenic and make the hair growth worse. So many women are not told this!

I’m choosing to go with what the experts in women’s health say. You’re being deliberately obtuse and trying to be inflammatory.

I have fine hair growth on my upper lip, and have never done anything to it for fear of irritation on my sensitive skin, but also because I'm afraid it will just grow back thicker. Pale skin, hair is dark, just really fine.

What do you advise?

No expert is saying that hair on women is not normal. Stop your dumb BS.
