"The bill, introduced by socialist mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George (D-Ward 4), would prohibit Pepco, the city’s primary electricity provider, from disconnecting services for any customer owing less than $1,000 for 90 days. Lewis George argued the shutoff moratorium is necessary to ensure that D.C. residents who are struggling to get by don’t have to pay bills that might have been inflated. “For some people this is a strain on their finances, but for many it’s a breaking point,” she said."

| Why cap it? Once you are $1000 behind, what makes you think you will suddenly find the money to pay the bill? |
| Would probably be more effective to eliminate all lottery tickets, which is sadly where many poor people waste their money. |
| I mean, what's the current policy. I once had a banking issue that resulted in not paying my bill for four months (by accident, was sent to autopay but my bank tried to draw from the wrong account and the notices were going to spam) and wound up with an $800+ bill, and then we just paid it and nothing happened. Never even got a warning notice from Pepco, they just billed us (a frankly minuscule) late payment charge. |
That sounds like a reasonable outcome for a public utility. I don't need them making profit off a mix up like a credit card would. |
PEPCO doesn't send paper notices? |
| It’s ridiculous in 2026 that lower income and economically disadvantaged people even have to pay for electricity at all. There should be a city voucher program to cover electricity cost for people with incomes under a certain threshold. The entire program could be funded with a very small fee on the electric bills of commercial users and high income households. |
| It's ridiculous anyone has to pay for electricity it's a human right like healthcare or food or a house with spa showers. |
| What income level would be considered "high income level" to subsidize the energy costs for the lower income levels? |
That's ridiculous. We shouldn't foot the bill for poor people. Only for billionaires! They deserve our charity. |
Anyone with a job. |
Everyone I know is outraged by this. |
When you are behind, you can call PEPCO. These folks are taking advantage of the system. God you are gullible. |
|
Omg someone might get a 3 month loan from Pepco.
Wake me when PPP loans are paid back |
Is there any limit to what "high income households" should pay for? And you do know that commercial users will put higher costs through to their consumers, right? |
