Can there actually be an environmental silver lining to Iran/Trump/Hormuz/oil crisis?

More shift in demand away from oil & gas and petrochemicals-based products, more electric vehicles and use of public transportation, more shift to renewable energy, more locally-based seasonal produce, less overall consumption and energy use?

I wouldn’t wish this economic calamity on the world, but wouldn’t it be nice if this were the result.

It's going to have to get far worse than it is now for that to occur. If it gets that much worse, a lot of people will be hurting (think of all the freight/shipping in a big country like the US). My friend in Norway said gas is ~ 9 $USD/gallon now, but followed up with this stat - "in other news 98.4% of all cars sold in norway in march were pure EVs". They've been far ahead of most nations with EV adoption, but maybe we can at least make a decent start down that path.

Unlikely to have a silver lining.

Not in the US but in the rest of the world yes. Australia, Europe and Asia have seen demand growth both in EVs and solar plus grid batteries. The Chinese have the capacity to meet this demand.

For Europe to replace the LNG lost from Persian gulf they would need to build 30-40 GW of solar power. In 2025 Europe added 65 GW of solar. It will take 3-5 year to rebuild the Qatar infrastructure. It will take 12 to 18 months to build out solar. The same things are happening all over except for the US. Demand for EVs(scooters, motorcycles, three wheel vehicles, passenger cars, heavy duty trucks, etc) is through the roof.

Multiple silver linings!

1) Idiots who voted for him can now barely afford to put gas in their Hemi pick up trucks. I think that’s beautiful.

2) people will be driving less. That’s a positive thing.

3) this hurts republicans. Always a good thing.

4) drives up the value of homes in city centers and close to transit options, which helps people like me who were sophisticated enough to buy in such locations years ago.

5) devalues suburbs and makes them undesirable.

There’s FIVE silver linings!

I hope this war drags on forever and Iran ultimately kicks our ass.

Even the nederthals on conservative Reddit are talking about the benefits of EVs. So, that’s a step in the right direction.

Nearly every factory in the world shut down over covid, with most people in the world staying home and not driving

It did not make even the teeniest dent in pollution.

The height of covid, when the world practically stood still, was an environmental silver lining.

This is far from it.

People will rethink travel because it will be too expensive.

Domestic airlines are still finding stable demand and high load factors.
