I just finished Theo of Golden which everyone raves about. I had to force myself to finish. The concept seemed interesting but it really dragged for me. The book was cloying and saccharine.

I just started Sociopath: A Memoir and it’s too soon to form an opinion. My next read will be The Correspondent.

My last great read was The Wedding People.

The Woman in Cabin 10. Really liked it.

I'm flying through the Emma M. Lion journals. I'm just starting volume 4. Beth Brower knows how to write intriguing male characters.

I'm slowly working my way through these, finished book two yesterday. I don't want to go too quickly and be stuck waiting for the next book.

Currently I'm reading The Compound. It's described as Love Island meets Lord of the Flies. Currently I'm only aware of the Love Island side of that comparison, though I do know there are ongoing wars outside in the real world. I can't wait for work to be over so I can get back to it.

Started Kin by Tayari Jones (who is wonderful, I met her when she taught a workshop at my grad program).

This book is so good, I can barely put it down. I'm not even finished and I can tell you it's a 10/10. Incredible voice. And can we please have more books about women and their friendships?

This was a DNF for me. Will be interested to hear what you think. I got bored quickly.

It was a DNF for me, too! Like, within the first couple of chapters.

I’ve heard the same, on the library waitlist (and will be for while!).

Just finished a couple of titles from the International Booker list, The Wax Child by Olga Ravn, and On Earth As It Is Beneath by Ana Paula Maia. Just saw the latter made the shortlist but the former didn’t. Honestly quite enjoyed both. Both short. Wax Child is a fever dream retelling of a 17th century Danish witchcraft trial, very hypnotic writing and some really incisive statements about the hopelessness of womanhood in this period (not that we’ve come as far as I’d hoped). On Earth is this tiny little nugget of cruelty and machismo and prison-complex-as-slaughterhouse-complex, which seems to have become almost its own genre in Latin American writing. Overall it worked for me, and I’m going to check out the author’s other book, which picks up the story of one of the main characters from On Earth.

Now I’ve started Nova Scotia House which feels completely different once again but is also quite mesmerizing in its style.

I just finished this! Loved it and can totally see it as a movie. Beautiful writing.

Same. I didn't make it halfway through. It's a boring slog. Pages and pages and pages of "Oooooh, I'm so edgy, I break into people's houses and walk around."

It's next on my list. I've read all of her books.
