Just finished a couple of titles from the International Booker list, The Wax Child by Olga Ravn, and On Earth As It Is Beneath by Ana Paula Maia. Just saw the latter made the shortlist but the former didn’t. Honestly quite enjoyed both. Both short. Wax Child is a fever dream retelling of a 17th century Danish witchcraft trial, very hypnotic writing and some really incisive statements about the hopelessness of womanhood in this period (not that we’ve come as far as I’d hoped). On Earth is this tiny little nugget of cruelty and machismo and prison-complex-as-slaughterhouse-complex, which seems to have become almost its own genre in Latin American writing. Overall it worked for me, and I’m going to check out the author’s other book, which picks up the story of one of the main characters from On Earth. Now I’ve started Nova Scotia House which feels completely different once again but is also quite mesmerizing in its style.
