Woman forced to have C section

Anonymous
Crazy story from Florida.

A woman in labor was forced into court via Zoom. Judge said hospital could give her a C section against her will in an emergency.

“Emergency” happened a few hours later.

Neither is judge.

Patient was not allowed a lawyer. They all ganged up on her.

There is nothing wrong with a C-section.

It should be a decision by the medical team, not the government.

There isn’t a lot of data for vbac. There might be a low risk but complications always result in death. Also obesity complicates everything. Recovery from a C-section is really not that bad. I recovered faster than my friends who had vaginal births.

Yes it is horrible that they don’t honor the women’s choice but also doctors have to do no harm and the risk analysis they perform with patients should be respected. As another poster stated, doulas aren’t doctors and have no formal medical training. Doulas are very woo woo.

The natural end result of very restrictive anti-abortion laws IMO. The women all had multiple prior C’s and the hospital was desperately trying to cover their own asses and avoid liability (civil AND criminal) if a vaginal birth went terribly wrong, labor never progressed, and the baby died - which there is a higher risk of with a VBAC after multiple c-sections.

Did you read the article? The doctors and nurses were on the call with the judge.

If she was that smart, would've avoided fourth pregnancy after having three C-sections and focused on staying alive and healthy for three existing children.

Being a doula doesn't make her a medical specialist and she can't override her ONGYN's opinion of a bad outcome trying to do it vaginally and then suing the hospital as the responsible person.

That being said, if she is medically competent, have her sign the waiver of responsibility for making this decision. Every human should've autonomy on their body and an unborn person doesn't have more rights than an existing person.

If someone wants to deny care or die for their own reasons, government has no right to force them to accept care or stay alive. Her body, her choice, even if its a stupid choice.

On a side note, OBGYN's tend to do unnecessary C-sections and hysterectomies so one can totally understand her suspicions.

Yeah, the medical team made the right call.
This woman had some serious wishful thinking going on if she thought this was likely to end as an uncomplicated, successful vaginal delivery. As much as it sucks to have a hard C section recovery, at the end of the day the medical team is having to make these calculations knowing how things could have gone horribly wrong if they hadn’t intervened. They see how these go down every day. One woman’s wishful thinking does not change reality.

Women of color tend to get lesser care in hospitals. That's a known fact.

This is less about abortion and much much more about CYA.

She is obese and had 3 previous C sections. This was a very high risk patient.

I read the article and think it's complicated. I absolutely know that women of color are treated horribly in the medical field.

But, if she or the baby died, then the hospital would be held liable and people would say that was racist. She is right to distrust the medical community and they denied her a person of color on the call. The hospital is also right to prevent death and said it was based on her past delivery and waited until the baby showed further distress signs. Both can be true.

People should be allowed to make decisions that ultimately kill them. And, hospitals shouldn't infantilize patients, so they should just have her sign a waiver saying that she agreed to forgo medical advice.
