This sounds like a back door recruiting event to lure kids to Skyview since they didn’t meet their original target to get 1000 kids to opt in this fall.
Sad that there will be 26 high schools in FCPS this fall and Reid only cares about one of them. |
| I would love to know if South County and Westfield meet the same resistance as Skyview when they were opened. |
There was a lot of controversy over the South County boundaries and in particular what it would do to Hayfield before it opened. Westfield wasn’t equally controversial. Before that, there had been some back-and-forth as to whether Centreville might open as a secondary school before the decision was made to open it as a high school. But it also wasn’t the case that FCPS had expanded nearby schools to the same extent prior to building those schools. In comparison, FCPS expanded South Lakes, Oakton, Herndon, and Madison (and made plans to expand Centreville) based on the assumption that a new western HS either would never get built or was at least 10 years away (you can check the CIPs that kept bumping out the start date of any new Western HS, which many interpreted to mean the school was no longer truly needed given the expansions of other schools and would never get built). If you have any doubt about this check the pre-2025 threads on this forum relating to the “western high school.” |
There were people in their feelings about splitting up Hayfield (essentially since most of SoCo’s attendance came from that one school). I also recall some fights about its attendance area but that was more along the lines of making sure the new school didn’t get stuck with all the bad neighborhoods. Hayfield was pretty overcrowded though. Also the board at the time didn’t dick around with “opt ins” from areas that might not even be in its attendance area when the boundaries are set. I don’t remember the specifics of who got to stay where they were, definitely rising seniors though, but I don’t know that they extended the grandfathering past that. |

I have no issue if Reid wants to attract students from overcrowded schools like Chantilly and Oakton to Skyview before they are permanently assigned there, but it’s gross how she’d happily raid schools that would benefit from retaining kids to make the Skyview launch look better.
It’s not like they can say Skyview is a centrally located site for a “student summit” - Fairfax or Woodson would more readily fit that bill. |
| It’s not centrally located but it is not being used so nothing at the school will be disrupted. |
Yep, Bread crumbs in plain site, amazing so few see them. |
Fair point, although one might wish they focused on getting the school ready to handle all 2000 of the planned kids, not having more open houses. |

When Westfield was opened, there was some controversy--but not like "Rooted in Oakton." People happy at Chantilly lobbied to stay there. I think there were some who had formerly gone to Oakton who were disappointed, but got over it quickly. But, then they took some who had been sent from Oakton to Westfield and sent them to South Lakes a few years later. That seemed a little unfair.
However, when Westfield opened, there was a very positive vibe about it. The principal and a very strong staff played a big part in it. |
| Who has been invited to this Student Summit? |
Considering my current senior in HS was invited, I don’t think so… |
Were current freshmen invited? |
Apparently (mine was). |
| FCPS central office employee here. It’s really not that exciting; space with parking for events such as this is impossible to find, so Skyview has become a nice option for this year. Staff are working diligently to get the building ready for next year, and this day will be no different. The people tasked with putting this together are different from those opening up Skyview. |
