There was a lot of controversy over the South County boundaries and in particular what it would do to Hayfield before it opened.  Westfield wasn’t equally controversial.  Before that, there had been some back-and-forth as to whether Centreville might open as a secondary school before the decision was made to open it as a high school.

But it also wasn’t the case that FCPS had expanded nearby schools to the same extent prior to building those schools.  In comparison, FCPS expanded South Lakes, Oakton, Herndon, and Madison (and made plans to expand Centreville) based on the assumption that a new western HS either would never get built or was at least 10 years away (you can check the CIPs that kept bumping out the start date of any new Western HS, which many interpreted to mean the school was no longer truly needed given the expansions of other schools and would never get built).  If you have any doubt about this check the pre-2025 threads on this forum relating to the “western high school.” [/quote]
