dyeing hair pink (w/ bleach) - DYI or salon

Anonymous
My daughter wants to dye her hair pink. It's naturally a medium golden brown so would need to be bleached first. And it's fairly long, past her shoulders. The salon where we go said $600, so all in would be like $750 Should we just bleach and dye it at home? Any suggestions for kits to use? I don't want to ruin her hair. Thansk.

Other people feel differently, but I believe color is best left to the professionals especially when it is a multi-step process. The caveat is that pink will fade fast even on bleached hair. When I’ve done pink hair in the past, I’ve added pink extensions to look like highlights. My hair is red and it was a good match. It lasts longer, but is probably not cheaper.

omg please take her to a salon. This is a disaster in the making. Find a colorist who is familiar with "vivids".

Salon.

Definitely a salon. Bleaching her hair could cause serious damage to her hair and cause it to break or fall out.

However, if she's never gone colorful before I'd suggest trying a color depositing conditioner first (for a teen something like Manic Panic is classic). Even a salon bleach and dye job can be quite hard in your hair and the bright colors can fade super fast. You can't keep it up easily without hair damage. Semi permanent can be maintained without as much damage (it's not perfect but a lot less harsh). Just be careful with towels and pillow cases.

I sure hope you aren’t paying for this. Your daughter can save up if this is what she wants to do.

You are overthinking this. Do you think every emo teen w/ brightly colored hair gets $700+ dye jobs? No -- they go to Sally's and grab some bleach and manic panic and go to town. Let your teen be a teen.

My son's friends regularly dye their hair at home. Some even just use Kool Aid. There is absolutely no way I would ever pay as 600-750 for hair. That's insane.

Get some kool aid or manic panic and let her go at it.

In the long run it is more cost effective for my DD to have it done at a salon. The first visit is $$$ because of the bleaching (she has long brunette hair naturally)-then add the creative color on top (we like pulp riot) then a glaze.

This costs about $300.

However, then every 6 weeks she gets a redo of the color and it costs about $45. We skip the blowout to save money- so she leaves with wet hair but it is more budget friendly.

Depending how fast the hair grows, roots are bleached every few months. You need to make sure your DD is ok with the blonde that is left after color washes out- salon color lasts about 6 weeks, at home kits we have tried fade much faster. Also the toothbrush up is where it will be important that your DD visits a salon or educates herself on DIY.

I also recommend color wow shampoo- it’s $$$ but helps preserve the color.

This is not a one time thing for your DD- it is an ongoing maintenance situation and home color kits can dry the hair after multiple uses.

Can she do just a partial color? Salons can get creative with color without bleaching an entire head of hair. You have to be carried with brown to blonde as it can pull orange if not done right.

I have done this.

I would get her hair bleached and toned professionally, but not the pink. Just a good bleach and tone to a flattering blonde tone that is neutral or ashy (you want to stay away from warm tones since the plan is to layer pink on top).

She doesn't need to do a full bleach job. Highlights will be enough and is a good place to start anyway. They will also grow out better.

I would not go to the place charging $700. I've paid $$$ for bleach and also gone to like Bubbles. I don't think the more expensive place is necessary for what you are talking about. She's just looking for a blonde base over which to layer pink dye.

Then do the pink at home. That part is fun and easy to DIY. And yes it will fade fast. But that's fun too -- it gives you a chance to play around with it and figure out what saturation you like best. With pink I actually prefer it a bit faded, it looks better with my skin. With purple I love it super saturated and will redo it regularly to keep it. She can also experiment with color washes and other products (hair chalk). Once you have the blonde base, it's all gravy.

+1

Yes I strongly recommend your daughter gets her hair bleached by a professional.
Maybe visit a few hair salons and see if you can get a place to do it for less.
Or……
Have you considered a beauty school?

Then apply the pink color at home.
I think these hair colors only come in temporary anyway so it would be insane to pay a pro to put in semi-permanent hair dye!
