We were sent an email that they would be meeting this week "sometime" with the counselor (for the first time) and also that the deadline for final class selections was Friday? In 8th grade, they had a lot longer time to consider.
Is this standard across fcps? |

Ours met 2-3 weeks ago.
You got a dud, sorry. Make sure you are tracking deadlines, double check SIS throughout the spring to make sure that the right classes are put in, and everything else because this counselor is not on top of things. |
Nope we are at Westfield...talk about duds. |
Ours have not met either. I asked DS last night and he said he thought it was last week but now it's this week or next

Sorry to say but this is quite late, and you should have requested a meeting previously to get ahead of the last week rush. The guidance counselor is going to be slammed.
You should email the counselor, and say your child needs to discuss in person. Prior to that your child should send the guidance counselor an email requesting a meeting and giving at least the basics of what they need to know. The deadline is the 6th. |
What do you mean by OP should have requested a meeting? The process at our school is the counselor meets with the students, hopefully has teacher recs for next course level selection, then the parents discuss at home, then the counselor makes adjustments. OP is doing what the school told her to do. The school counselor clearly dropped the ball on meeting with students. Which is a little baffling considering they only have so many 9th-11th graders in their student load. |
We are also at Westfield, my daughter said she doesn't even know who her counselor is and has never met her. I had no idea the final deadline for class choice was this week! What on earth?! Last year in 8th she had several weeks to consider. |

My junior met with their counselor many many weeks ago.
If the counselor is that behind on her workload that she is meeting with students so late, they need to extend the deadline. That's absurd. What if she doesn't get to them until Friday? |

My freshman met with his counselor several weeks ago.
|
| I think counselors are way behind in scheduling due to all the snow days and delays. I would email the counselor and find out. |
Clearly your kids does not go to Westfield-the bare minimum happens there. |
If true, the this Friday deadline should be extended. |
Everyone has the same weather, the same number of students and the same deadlines, but most counselors met with their freshmen weeks ago. |
| Sophomore DD met with her counselor last week, I think Wednesday, after she contacted her counselor because she was the last in her friend group to have not met with her counselor. We just found out today that she signed her up for a class she did not request. This is not at Westfield. |
You have to check and recheck and recheck. The counselors will do things to make life easier on their end without reaching out to you to discuss. They are very sneaky with electives in particular. Hoping you won't notice and then it will be "too late". |
