Is this a scam? Accusing someone of touching your car

Anonymous
This has happened to me twice in two weeks - woman in a parked car next to mine pops out whole I'm loading the car and accuses me of "hitting" her car. In one case I am absolutely certain I didn't touch it, in the other case my coat did since it was a tight parking lot.

What is the expected outcome here - that we'd exchange insurance information? Would you do this?

WTF?? why would you exchange insurance information if all you did is brush you coat with her car? No, you get out of there.

They try to get you to Cash App them in exchange for them not calling their insurance or try to scam insurance after creating fake damage to their car afterward.

OP here. In both cases, I just said "no I didn't touch your car" and I left. One lady was mad about it and the other just shrugged.

I don't understand what they thought was going to happen, even if I had scratched it.

If you walk out into a near empty lot and a car is parked right next to your driver side with very little room, someone is probably lurking nearby.

Parking lot scanners are all over in this area.

Jokes on them because I'm very thin and an expert at squeezing through tight spaces. Nice try, buddy.

Or you could just go through the passenger side.

Ironically some of these scammers also run those dent fixing scams!

But even if my fat ass rubs against their car, what are the damages?

If that happens, an easy way to get around it would be to take photos both of how close they are parked and of the exterior of their car BEFORE you get in your car. Then if they try to claim you damaged their car, you have evidence of their negligence in where they parked, plus can show the condition of their car before you got into yours. So they can't claim you caused an existing scratch or dent.

Then if they complain, you just provide your evidence to the insurance company. They will probably want you to give them cash anyway and avoid insurance companies, but obviously don't do that.

I'm not inconveniencing myself for these scammers.

Take pictures of both cars and then take a picture of their plate. Say I don’t see any damage.

If you would like to take pictures and report it to the police, you’re more than welcome to.

Somebody would have to dent my car pretty hard before I'd bother exchanging insurance information. Even if they're at fault, you still pay your deductible, right? This is why I don't claim against trucks for kicking up rocks into my windshield, either. Crap happens.

And on the other side of this, even if I tapped their door and they made a scene about it, I'd be calling my insurance to say no damage caused. So it just doesn't seem very lucrative.
