Getting Rescinded, when to worry, calculus 😬

Anonymous
DD was accepted ED into a top SLAC. She’s thrilled but she’s also currently failing calculus. First quarter she pulled an A-, second quarter a C-,and she currently has an F. I don’t think there will be a fourth quarter grade since she’s doing a senior project.

Does anyone know any good on-line tutors that would be available to help land the plane? We don’t know of anyone local and unfortunately the teacher is not much help.

The main worry, of course, is being rescinded. Her other grades are good. What is the line for these top schools? Is a final grade of a C okay if everything else is up to par? She’s not recruited athlete or otherwise hooked. There is certainly some senioritis at play but she is trying, calculus is just not her cup of tea.

Look at Wyzant…tons of tutors for everything. My calculus-taking kid has had a great tutor.

She will not be rescinded for a C in one class. Or even for a D.

Just always keep up with the materials. Whenever she has questions, ask the teacher right away. It’s pretty difficult to get a C in high school, unless she doesn’t bother at all.

Is her narrative/her intended major STEM focused? Won’t be rescinded but counselor may get a call asking what’s up

OP here. Thank you for your responses. Her narrative/intended major is not STEM necessarily; she's really undecided but has considered Econ or Biology.

I feel like a C is attainable, but there's likely no way she's able to get a B-. If admissions does inquire, there's no excuse othere than "it's hard!". Maybe they'll appreciate her honesty lol.

I have had luck going to smaller local SAT Prep websites and seeing if they have a tutor for math.
Here is the one we worked with - and I spoke with a person who discussed my child's needs and matched me with a tutor who had availability and could accommodate my child's schedule.

You might want to try ask rose: https://askrose.org/about/
It is students from Rose-Hulman who you can call / chat / email with. And they will work through problems with you.

I highly recommend Sean C., a Wyzant tutor. My kid said he was the most clear math teacher they'd ever had. They were working toward the Calc BC exam and the kid got a 5.

And no, I am NOT Sean C. and I do not know him personally.

Sorry it wasn't Sean C. -- it was Tim C!

His Wyazant profile reads: Math Professor for Math Tutoring: HS, College, AP Calculus, AP Stats
I am a full-time tutor after leaving a more than 20-year career as a tenured mathematics professor at a teaching-oriented university. I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in mathematics.

Good luck!

Know someone who had to write an essay over the summer to their college to explain a C. The college asked for it. Was not rescinded but the college wanted an explanation/plan for future improvement.

The way to learn calculus is to do problems and then more problems. You can't shortcut that hard work with a tutor. You still have to do problem after problem after problem.

Has your daughter actually gone to the teacher and said, “I’m failing and I need help... I can't lose my college admission because of one class”?

Tutoring yes and you have good suggestions here, but I would also have her start with the teacher.

Moral support - DC was admitted to WASP ED with a B last year in math (only B) and now has a C+ in multivariable calc (and it's not trending up!). Not worrying about it, they're trying their best.
