| I am not a left-wing liberal, I am a centrist/independent suffering from TDS. If it were any other (decent) Republican or Democrat in charge I would be fine and excited to participate. The logical part of my brain knows Trump is not America and America is not Trump, but I can’t help feeling otherwise at this moment. I just cannot celebrate a country that would put this guy in power and still largely supports him, despite knowing what he has done and what he is doing. It feels hypocritical to me, like throwing a birthday party for a sibling who I know abuses his wife and children. Anyone else in this boat? |
| I remember 200 and have no desire to celebrate 250 under these circumstances. I'm sure 150 wasn't a big deal. Let's just skip and wait for 300 to really celebrate. If our country makes it that far. |

You just sound dumb. Incapable of separating the whole rest of our Republic from a guy you hate.
Just another dummy, among millions. |
| Very excited! Trump does everything big so it will be great to see what all the events are. Kids loved seeing the Washington monument lit up earlier. |
| I totally understand but decided I won't let him ruin everything for me. He's vile. American 250 might be cool and I hope it is. Don't let him take an ounce of joy from you. |
| I'm not as excited. It remains to be seen if the American experiment and the republic will stand as it was in 2015 in 2028. |
| I would like to celebrate but I won’t be doing it in DC. |
| No, and I wouldn't care regardless of who was president. |

I plan to celebrate in the streets when Trump dies. He's a truly terrible human.
That said--I think we need to celebrate America on its 250! I think we cannot let our ideals go without celebration. I don't have any fantasy that American can remain at the top of the world, but I do believe strongly in the mission. I think we have become too nice and empathetic. America was built on incredibly hard work and visible consequences. We need to celebrate our best and brightest, give them all the opportunities to succeed, and while we should not forget our poor, we cannot focus all our energy and money on them. |
OP: I totally agree with what you’re saying here and agree that Dems have swung too far in the wrong direction. However, when I see the characters in this administration and their policy actions (like cutting research funding), it’s very much anti-best and brightest. And since America voted them in, doesn’t it mean America is now the same? |
| I’ll find it difficult to celebrate the nation’s history while the nation’s history is currently being rewritten/sanitized. |
|
I feel the same way you do, OP. I just don't feel like celebrating the country right now because I'm so concerned about the status of our democracy. I know there are lots of dark days in our history and I try to put this in perspective, but it's so hard.
I am watching the Olympics right now and I feel similarly about it. I am happy for the individual athletes who have worked so hard to achieve their dreams, but I don't want to hear about how great the US is doing in medal counts and I feel uncomfortable with how US-focused the NBC broadcast is. I don't want to see the US dominate and just don't have a lot of national pride at the moment, even though I don't want to take anything away from the athletes. |

We recently enjoyed our visit to Washington's Crossing State Park. They have a really interesting museum on site. It was really cold, like 10 degrees that day, so it gave me perspective on the crossing over to Trenton in December. They also had reproduction Durham boats which were cool to see.

Hard to get excited when the country is descending into totalitarianism.
But not to worry. I guess we can have a make-up Super Duper Patriotic Celebration Bash when the double cheeseburger finally exacts its revenge. There is nothing more patriotic than celebrating the demise of authoritarian leaders. There will be dancing in the streets and parties all night. |
| I find the MAGAtized version of our history makes the celebrations unappealing to me. |
