Please do not bash.
I was looking up CDS today because saw posts saying all T10 schools are 40%+ Asian. While it's probably true for Hopkins, I found out that Chicago takes 20% Asian. Why does Chicago have a much lower percentage of Asian students than Hopkins? Anyone know why? Does that mean Asian applicants have an advantage at Hopkins compared to Chicago? TIA |
| Chicago doesn't have engineering, which limits its appeal for a lot of students. |
| Yale is 18% and Brown is something like 21-30% Asian. Its just variations in the demographics the schools attract. JHU is renowned for STEM, which a lot of Asian Americans pursue. The schools I mentioned above + Chicago are known for humanities and social sciences, which less Asians pursue. |
Makes sense, at least partially explains it. |
JHU was only 25% Asians in 2023 but jumped dramatically to 45% in 2025. Harvard for the past three years was 30%, 37%, and 41%, also exhibiting significant increase. The timing appears to align with the magnitude of funding/other threats the current administration imposed on elite colleges. No colleges want to remain in the crosshair, but the extent to which they are willing to compromise seems to vary quite a bit. Like you said, certain schools seem capable of maintaining the status quo -- UChicago at 21%, Northwestern at 26%, and Duke at 25%, with the latter two having good-to-great engineering programs. Not sure how they managed that. |
| I don’t know what actual numbers are, but I think Chicago is definitely more than 20% Asian. I have a kid there and have observed. It feels the same in that regard as others. I think they maybe separate out international students, most of whom are Asian. |
No! The increase in Asian students is directly connected to the Harvard SCOTUS case!! |
| Chicago is not a T10 though. |
Any thread where Chicago is mentioned, she's always right there. |
Crazy how the word "Chicago" will make the striver NOVA moms uncover themselves. |
Hopkins asian population shot up after SFFA. Chicago, not so much. There were a handful of top schools that seemed to be engaging in "massive resistance" against the SFFA ruling. |
Chicago is known for Economics and that is a desirable major. |
For the zillionth time, it does have engineering, MENG! Good grief people. |
| Sooo many Asians want UChicago for the mathematical econ, it's very popular, and leads to fabulous job placement. Many Asians on campus, Booth is known to be a quant business school. |
Yes, but that's only one specialty within engineering that isn't very popular. |
