| Our PSD says that she has not seen this much interest in all boys K-8 in her 20+ years and says it will be very competitive. Anyone getting the same feedback? My sister's son got into practically all of them (except St. Bs) 5 years ago despite getting soso feedback. |
| Is your PSD trying to gently prepare you for potential rejections/waitlists? We hear admissions are way up across the board this year, not just for boys K-8 |
| Yep. I’ve heard up 30% across the board. |
For middle and high school too? I wonder why? I’m surprised that in this current environment people aren’t thinking twice about shelling out 70k a year for elementary school. |
At the risk of turning this into a Mamdani thread (please don't): applications season coincided with the peak of anti-Mamdani hysteria, I can easily imagine a bunch of people who were previously on the fence deciding that they'd rather not have their kids in a system run by his schools chancellor. Could also reflect fear of what Trump might do to public schools, this being the first admissions season after the election. Or wealthy people moving to NYC from red states where they fear they'll no longer be protected from those states' worst impulses. |
I’ve only heard from k admissions/families. No idea about other entry points. There was a covid birth uptick- those kids apply to k this year and next year. |
| Honestly it’s probably just marketing gimmick to make the schools seem more desirable. But also your PSD is trying to manage your expectations for a WL |
I had the same thought. But we have no skin in this game, as my kids are already in ongoing schools, so it is purely a guess. |
Actually birth rates have consistently declined since 2013. The covid baby boom is another hysteria inducing myth |
| I have also heard this is true from other parents (have a boy at a k-8). |
I didn’t say boom, I said uptick. Believe what you’d like, but I’ve been working admissions events at our school for years. This year— I’ve never seen so many people at every event. I asked admissions and they said applications are up 30%. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/covid-caused-a-baby-bump-when-experts-expected-a-drop-heres-why/ |
I believe you saw more people at your school events than before. But literally there have been no birth rate increases in NYC from Covid, not even an uptick. It was 120-125K births in 2018 and 2019 in NYC. It took a nose dive to 85K births in 2020 and 2021 |

I have a son at a K-8 and a daughter at a K12, and I cannot love my son’s school more. The middle school students at these schools just aren’t that important, so socially it really sort of sucks, and the college admissions overwhelms the curriculum. It means that all the kids there’s parents want them go to Harvard no matter and tutor their children non-stop and relentlessly starting in second grade. My son’s k-8 is joyful, loving and doesn’t drain our will to get up in the morning.
The boys choose their high school so if they Go to a TT, they have chosen it and want it. The boys who graduate all have friends who care about them at other schools when they graduate, and the parents aren’t constantly seeking status. I wish they had a k-8 for girls. |
| The K-8 boys also differentiate, which almost nowhere does, but is actually the best model for smart children. Social peers with a teacher who provides challenge. The K-12 red shirt so many kids it means the one who can do the work young are socially battered and miserable and expected to act older younger, which is the exact opposite way gifted education works well. The pressure to mature at the girls schools starts in like 3rd grade and dictates the culture of the entire place. It’s actually not good academically to red shirt because the kid is always comparing themselves to peers who are actually younger so they hit a wall starting in middle. Probably won’t do single sex boys for high but everyone i know at my son’s school is happy, and everyone i know at my daughter’s K-12 feels lucky to be there but is unhappy. |
This is so great to hear, was totally the vibe we got from touring k-8 vs the k-12 |
