Loyola

My son has a friend at Loyola who loves it. I don’t know anyone else who goes there so I’m curious for any insight. It seems like a good size for my son and the location is great as far as being closer to home but not too close. I am worried about the safety of the campus though and where students live if they move off campus because Baltimore is not the safest. Does anyone have any insight on this university? Thank you!!

Loyola is literally in the middle of the safest part of Baltimore. Don’t know for sure, but I suspect when students move off campus, they move to Towson, the immediate neighborhood wouldn’t have a lot of student housing options (expensive single family homes) but Towson has a lot of apartments where students live.

That area is suburban feel in the city. It is not in the downtown area.

Our friend's son absolutely loves it. Really nice kids. He likes the business classes and is doing well. The vibe is social without being too much. And he likes the off-campus area. Very happy with the choice.

I think they have expanded housing so off campus housing is less common. there are nearby apartments, places to live in Charles Village etc. Loyola has a campus feel. It is in a safe/lovely party of the city. The York Road side is a little more urban. Go check it out! the city has a lot to offer.

Not many students live off campus but some live near JHU in building like the Social. Also a mile or so away at the Woodberry. Loyola has great housing. A lot of it is former apartments so spacious. My son lived in one of the largest buildings and his apartment was huge.

I think from the context clues of Baltimore from OP they mean Loyola Maryland

The Loyola kids don’t live in Charles Village.

Any experience with Loyola Honors? High acceptance rate but seems Honors may have very strong cohort seeking more personalized college experience?

It's been a long time for me, students would definitely rent houses in Charles Village. Towson was less common, but had more opportunites for off campus jobs - there are a lot more apartments there now. Loyola has housing for 4 years and most people live on campus. I would imagine some precentage of commuters live with their families, especially after the first 2 years. Again, many years ago, it was common for people in certain majors (education, business) to live at home their last year to facilitate student teaching or internships.

I went to Hopkins and lived three years off campus in Charles Village. There simply isn’t enough housing available for students for Loyola students to live there, it’s all Hopkins. Someone above mentioned Loyola students living in the Social, which is in Tuscany Canterbury. That makes mich more sense, as fewer Hopkins students live there and Tuscany-Canterbury is directly adjacent to the Loyola campus, so within walking distance, Charles Village would not be a walk. There are several apartment buildings right next to the Social.

DP but I’m also wondering about Loyola honors and whether it would be a would be a good fit for a high stat kid who wants to go to a small school with a reasonable tuition.
