HS Swim - Districts this weekend?

Anonymous
Given FCPS schools are out this Friday, will holding the meet only be dependent on whether the rec centers are open? Or is there a chance districts could be canceled due to the cold weather?

Our first dual meet in December was canceled when Fairfax canceled all school activities after 6 PM. I’d hate for that to happen again.

Not sure what district you are in but ours, National district, is throwing around timed finals on Saturday or pushing to next weekend. But it will also depend on if FCPS allows activities on or off campus. Rec Centers will be open so they won't be the barrier.

Dicey. Liberty District: If either Arl. or FCPS closed Friday, then Districts will be timed finals and if closed Saturday, timed finals next Monday.

Stinks b/c I bet one or both of the counties will be closed Friday and not looking great Saturday knowing how things are in this area. So my $$ is on Monday.

Parent of a freshman swimmer here, so new to Districts.

Do the schools provide busses to Districts like they do to regular meets? Or are families responsible for getting their own kids to the pool? I could see that making the difference between canceling vs not.

When our first swim meet was canceled, there was another event at our school at the same time that was not canceled because there were no FCPS busses involved. Our meet was canceled because FCPS didn't want busses on the road.

For our school, Friday prelims has a bus and Saturday finals does not. That's why Friday cancellation is possible even though rec centers will be open.

AFAIK, all counties in NoVA require student athletes to ride the bus to events not hosted at the school itself and there is some radius (ie a few miles) from the school where they don't have to take the bus. ie my child's HS is 1 mile from the rec center and they don't make them take a bus for that ride.

Since school tomorrow/Tuesday is now cancelled and Wednesday is a wash with 2 hour release it seems likely FCPS will allow sports.

I was out driving earlier today, it was fine for normal driving etc. School buses at bus stops would be issues. But not going from a school to a school or school to a pool.

The volunteer sign up sheet has prelims Friday early evening (volunteers arrive at 4:30) and same for swim finals on Saturday.

Yeah but this can be adjusted if FCPS makes operational decisions that necessitate timed finals.

Ours does too but it was sent out BEFORE the storm and any subsequent related decisions.
