Deviated septum 17-year old- recs

Anonymous
My son likely has a deviated septum. One nostril has become smaller - and he has trouble breathing through one nostril. The nose looks slightly off center—-might have been on older sport injury.

Does anyone have any recs for a good ENT? We are in Arlington. I have blue cross blue shield. As an infant/kid we have used medstar Georgetown docs- but willing to go NoVA/DC, etc,

Thanks!

I have a severely deviated septum (the scan showed a complete blockage of my left nasal cavity it due to it) and can’t breathe out of one nostril. I’ve seen someone at Feldman ENT mainly because I have recurrent sinus infections related to it. The dr recommends surgery but it isn’t “necessary” surgery so I keep putting it off.

Also put the surgery off until I got a sphenoid sinus infection and could no longer wait. So glad I ended up getting it, being able to breathe well is amazing.

Dr Preciado at children’s. We haven’t had the surgery yet (son is too young) but we will with him when he’s 16. Dr Preciado did his adenoid removal as a preschooler and I liked him. I guess I should probably look around though to see what people say since this is his nose… We have a few years yet.

Yes- we did the doc visit and they want us to go through the dr. neals saline washing and nasal spray until they would recommend surgery. I'd rather go straight to surgery. I don't see constant nose rinsing being the answer

It’s a great first step! You don’t want a doctor who jumps right to surgery. Surgery is still surgery and carries risks.

Op here- my kid does have a pretty bad deviated septum. Insurance requires 6 weeks of nasal spray prior to approving surgery. Dr said he would be shocked if the spray did anything and we scheduled surgery for after.

NP: It'd be great if he can get the surgery right after 6 weeks so he can be fully recovered before prom, before summer, before college.

He is! He has a two week spring break early starting March 28.

Balloon sinuolasty worked well for me and is a very minor procedure compared to the traditional surgical method. In the past I used various sprays, rinses and anticongestant and they did not help much

PP here. Balloon sinuplasty didn’t fix my deviated septum but I breath better so it os not a big issue anymore
